Job summary

The University of Kansas’s RedTire program seeks a student analyst to support valuation modeling and financial analysis for live business transitions. This on-site role at Capitol Federal Hall pays $10.25 per hour during training and offers wage increases for returning semesters based on performance.

Requirements include a finance- or accounting-focused undergraduate track (or MACC/MBA with finance) and enrollment in FIN 310/311. Summer terms require credit-hour enrollment.

Job description

Overview

RedTire is a KU School of Business venture designed to enhance the economic well‑being of Kansas and the surrounding states. The program matches qualified candidate buyers with successful small- to medium-sized businesses to prevent the shuttering of the business due to a lack of an owner successor. RedTire assists in transitioning the business to new ownership and relies on University of Kansas (KU) student interns for the financial analysis and valuation modeling phases of the process. The KU student analyst’s objective is to support the RedTire Director in delivering quality business and technical consulting to RedTire clients, while providing an excellent experiential learning opportunity for KU students. They will work on real-world case scenarios to transition a retiring owner’s business to a younger owner. The position works on-site at Capitol Federal Hall and starts with a wage of $10.25 per hour during the initial training period, with potential wage increases for returning semesters based on performance.

The KU student in this position will receive the following benefits:

• Applying academic valuation techniques to a live company and learning other small business valuation techniques not typically taught in the classroom.

Job Description

Job duties may include (but are not limited to):

• 35% – Extrapolate raw financial data (from tax returns and company P&L's) into RedTire models.
• 25% – Perform business valuation analyses using established models and procedures.
• 15% – Help with industry, location, and market research/risk initiatives.
• 15% – Other ad-hoc financial and modeling analysis duties as required.
• 10% – Assist with day-to-day administration of RedTire and help with leads for candidate businesses (sellers) and buyers for inclusion in the program.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

1. Business undergraduate student with finance or accounting tracks OR MACC or MBA graduate student with finance.
2. Completion or concurrent enrollment in “Finance” – FIN 310 or “Honors Finance” – FIN 311.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Working experience in a Finance-related field from an external employer internship covering some aspects of working with financial statements and/or valuation methodologies.

Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions

1. Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
2. This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
