Position Summary:

Provides leadership and ensures safe swimming conditions in the pool(s), on the pool deck(s), and in surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere promoting member safety and engagement, youth development, and healthy living in accordance with YMCA standards, policies, and procedures. Responsible for ensuring lifeguards and swim instructors meet essential job functions, supervising aquatics staff, and handling administrative duties under the supervision of the Aquatics Director.

Essential Functions:
  1. Know and understand all emergency procedures; respond immediately and appropriately in emergencies, activating communication plans as needed.
  2. Enforce safety rules, swim testing procedures, policies, and guidelines for the aquatics area.
  3. Perform maintenance to ensure safety and cleanliness, including vacuuming, cleaning pool deck, tiles, trash pickup, backwashing, and chemical adjustments.
  4. Maintain accurate records of chemical testing, equipment checks, and opening/closing procedures.
  5. Monitor risks continuously to prevent accidents.
  6. Maintain all required certifications per YMCA standards and policies.
  7. Model effective relationships, communicate rules clearly, and utilize customer service techniques.
  8. Provide leadership and guidance to lifeguards and swim instructors.
  9. Conduct aquatics audits, drills, and skill evaluations.
  10. Document incidents, accidents, member concerns, and equipment needs.
  11. Create and coordinate staff schedules, including substitutions.
  12. Schedule facility use for programs and events.
  13. Assist with staff meetings and trainings, attending at least four hours of in-service per month.
  14. Support YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
  15. Report suspicious behaviors and policy violations, following mandated reporting requirements.
  16. Meet deadlines related to employee compliance systems, such as UKG.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Two to three years related experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Lifeguard skills per YMCA policies.
  • Current YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard certification; obtain YMCA Lifeguard certification within 30 days if not already certified.
  • Current or obtain YMCA Swim Instructor Certification.
  • Obtain necessary certifications (CPR, First Aid, Oxygen, Child Abuse Prevention, etc.) prior to first shift.
  • Ability to effectively relate to diverse groups.
Skills:

Strong reading, writing, speaking, mathematical, reasoning, and physical abilities necessary for safety, rescue, and communication tasks.

Physical Demands:

Regularly stand, walk, communicate, handle objects, climb, reach, and perform rescues, lifting up to 50 pounds, with accommodations as needed.
