Definition of Position

Pool Lifeguard: $17.50-$22.83

Water Safety Instructor (WSI): $19.78-$25.81

Water Safety Instructor Aide (WSI Aide): $17.05-$22.16

Summary Description

Pool Lifeguard - Under supervision of assigned supervisory or management staff, performs a full range of lifeguard services during public sessions and swim instruction classes; protects life, prevents accidents, and enforces pool regulations; and performs related work as required.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) - Under general supervision of assigned supervisory or management staff, provides swimming instruction for various levels of classes; performs lifeguarding duties for public swimming instruction; and performs related work as required.

Water Safety Instructor Aide (WSI Aide) - Under supervision of assigned supervisory or management staff, assists in providing swimming instruction for various levels of classes; performs lifeguarding duties for public swimming instruction; and performs related work as required.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Pool Lifeguard

  • Observes swimmers and non-swimmers in the pool area from assigned station to identify and prevent unsafe conditions or potential hazards.
  • Explains and enforces pool rules to provide a safe and accident-free pool environment.
  • Responds to unsafe conditions and potential hazards.
  • Administers CPR and first aid as necessary.
  • Performs daily pool maintenance including set-up and take down of pool equipment.
  • Performs related work as required.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

  • Following American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor techniques and lesson plans, provides swim instruction for all age groups and ability levels.
  • Evaluates swimming abilities of all students to avoid unsafe conditions.
  • Explains and enforces pool rules to provide a safe and accident-free aquatics environment.
  • Administers CPR and first aid as necessary.
  • Maintains records and reports.
  • Performs daily pool maintenance including set-up and take down of pool equipment.
  • Performs related work as required.

Water Safety Instructor Aide (WSI Aide)

  • Assists in the instruction of swim classes for all age groups and ability levels.
  • Assists in planning and completing necessary paperwork for swim classes.
  • Works special events including pool rentals, recreational events, or swim camps.
  • Explains and enforces pool rules to provide a safe and accident-free aquatics environment.
  • Administers CPR and first aid as necessary.
  • Maintains records and reports.
  • Performs daily pool maintenance including set-up and take down of pool equipment.
  • Performs related work as required.

Pool Lifeguard

Knowledge Of:

Basic operations, services, and activities of a swimming facility.

Swim strokes including crawl, breast, back, side and elementary back.

Lifeguarding principles and lifesaving skills.

Water safety practices.

Leadership techniques and methods.

Principles and practices of general pool maintenance functions.

Principles and practices of public relations.

Ability To:

Rescue persons using lifeguard techniques.

Enforce applicable rules and regulations of the City pool.

Remain calm in emergency situations.

Communicate with tact to secure voluntary compliance with facility policies and rules.

Prepare written reports and records.

Assist with daily maintenance of the swimming facility.

Resolve problems promptly.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

Knowledge Of:

Education And Experience Guidelines:

Pool Lifeguard

Education/Training:

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

Experience:

Some experience as a lifeguard is desirable.

License Or Certificate:

Possession of CPR certification.

Possession of First Aid certification.

Possession of American Red Cross CPR-FPR (Professional Rescuer) is desirable.

Possession of American Red Cross Community First Aid is desirable.

Possession of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training is desirable.

Possession of Title 22 - First Aid for Public Safety Personnel is desirable.

Other Requirements:

Must be at least 16 years of age at the date of appointment.

Must possess good swimming skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential job functions.

Environment: Work is performed outside in an aquatics facility. Surfaces are hard and slippery. Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to swimming pool chemicals, as well as, adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, disease, or pathogenic substances.

Physical: Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sitting, walking, standing and swimming for prolonged periods of time; bending, stooping, kneeling or crouching; reaches with hands and arms; lifts, pushes, and pulls 50 pounds when responding to emergency lifesaving situations; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate pool equipment; mental capability to observe people and situations and respond calmly in emergency situations.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

Temporary/Seasonal Position

  • At-Will
  • 24 hours sick leave front loaded

  • Pay at the rate of time and one half if work on the following days: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year's Day
