POOL LIFEGUARD & SWIM INSTRUCTOR (RECREATION LEADER SPECIALIST VII-N/C)

Job Summary

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is seeking Lifeguards to join its aquatics team. This is a seasonal, part-time position with flexible hours, responsible for ensuring the safety of pool guests and providing swim instruction.

Position Details
  • This is an unclassified, non-career position, not requiring Civil Service application process.
  • Hours vary; not guaranteed; up to 1,600 hours/year.
  • No guaranteed health/dental/vision benefits, but sick leave may be available.
Responsibilities
  1. Monitor aquatics facilities and guests, ensuring compliance with rules and safety policies.
  2. Provide customer service, assist disabled guests, and handle complaints and safety issues.
  3. Instruct swimming and water aerobics classes.
  4. Maintain pool cleanliness and safety standards.
  5. Attend staff meetings, training, and in-service sessions.
  6. Maintain incident and operational logs.
  7. Adhere to dress code and administrative policies.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification and Water Safety Instructor within 6 months of hire.
  • Minimum age 16; if under 18, valid work permit required.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Experience in aquatics or recreation preferred.
Selection Process

Applicants must submit a complete application by the closing date. Selected candidates will undergo an interview and swim test (200 yards swim, stroke demonstration, brick retrieval, treading water). The process may be adjusted based on application volume.

Successful candidates will be expected to work at various pool locations, have flexible schedules, and relate well to diverse community members. Bilingual skills are desirable.
