Position Overview

The Biotechnology Department in the School of Professional Studies at the University of Kansas Edwards Campus invites qualified scholars and professionals to submit applications that will be reviewed by the faculty and placed in a pool for consideration for part-time Instructor positions. Instructors report to the Director of the Biotechnology Department. To learn more about courses offered through the Biotechnology Department see Biotechnology | School of Professional Studies. Instructors are instructional members of the faculty and are not eligible for tenure or promotion in rank. Primary role is instruction with no obligations to perform research or service. Instructors are placed in single term appointments, with renewal based upon unit needs and funding as well as performance that meets expectations, not to exceed two continuous semesters. This position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement between The University of Kansas and United Academics, United Academics of KU, AAUP, or AFT. UAKU is the exclusive representative. As the State of Kansas is a right to work state, you have the right to be a member or not be a member of a union without fear of personal or professional repercussions. Due to complex state employment laws, the University of Kansas may be unable to hire fully remote workers for this position outside of Kansas. Specifically, we cannot currently offer employment to candidates residing in the following states: California, Delaware, Idaho and Minnesota. Job Description
100% Instructor Duties:

Teach and/or develop a specified number of undergraduate/graduate courses per semester for the Biotechnology program.

Common examples of courses for which Instructors would be needed (but not limited to):

  • BTEC 341- Principles of Bioprocessing Laboratory I
  • BTEC 460- Introduction to Quality Control/Quality Assurance in Biotechnology
  • BTEC 542- Protein Expression in Insect Cells
  • BTEC 630- Biotechnology, Regulation, Quality Control, and Quality Assurance.
  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, the Instructor must make arrangements for a substitute.
  • Identify needed reagents and equipment, ensure adequate supplies levels are maintained for assigned class, communicate ordering needs to the Biotechnology Program Director.
  • Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught.
  • Be available for reasonable scheduling of appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
  • Adhere to all Departmental, School of Professional Studies, and University policies.
  • Instructors may work with Program Director to determine format and schedule for course(s). Courses may be cotaught with other appointed Lecturers under circumstances requiring diverse expertise.
Required Qualifications
  1. Earned Master's degree in biotechnology or a closely related field.
  2. Two years professional experience in biotechnology or a closely related field.

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Doctorate level degree in engineering, engineering management or a closely related field.
  2. Evidence of prior success in teaching, preferably at the graduate level and preferably both in-person and online (e.g. course evaluations, supervisor ratings).
  3. Experience with a learning management system, a classroom lecture recording system, and live-inclusion of remote students.
