Job summary

California Policy Lab is seeking a Project Scientist, Homelessness and Health Policy, to design and conduct policy-relevant research with state/local agencies. The role involves handling linked administrative data, overseeing data cleaning, implementing analysis plans, and disseminating findings to policy and academic audiences.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in economics/public policy/statistics or related field, expertise in homelessness/health policy, and strong econometric/causal

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in economics, public policy, statistics, or related social science field, or equivalent experience.
• Knowledge of homelessness or health policy.
• Knowledge of econometric methods for causal inference.
• Experience with large, complex datasets such as Medicaid or health billing data.
• Strong programming skills in Stata, R, Python, SAS, or SQL.
• Excellent written and oral communication, able to present to policy and academic audiences.
• Ability to supervise and develop junior staff and manage research projects.

Responsibilities

• Conduct quantitative research, including formulating questions, designing studies, and creating analysis plans.
• Request, receive, clean, and manage data files; perform quality checks and document replicability.
• Publish reports and policy briefs annually for academic and policy audiences.
• Lead research teams, write proposals, and ensure timely completion of tasks.
• Supervise research staff, including hiring decisions, mentoring, and task assignment.
• Collaborate with state/local agency staff to align research with joint agendas.
