Probationary Telecommunicators attend a three-week P.O.S.T.-certified dispatch academy. Training locations vary; tuition and travel are provided by the City. Post-training shift assignments depend on seniority and include 10-hour rotating shifts, often on weekends and holidays.
Under general supervision, receives 911 emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatches police units, operates telecommunications equipment, and performs related duties. Incumbents may be assigned to different levels based on education, certification, experience, and proficiency. Probationary period is one year at the Call Taker and Police Telecommunicator I levels.

Qualified applicants will be invited to take the PST Battery test. A minimum score of 70% is required. The City may use alternative testing methods. Performance will be ranked, with ties broken by application date and alphabetically.
