Job summary

The Port of Stockton is seeking a trustworthy and multitasking individual to join our team as a Police Support Technician. Under direct supervision, you will provide technical support to Port Police personnel ensuring safety of life and property at the Port District grounds.

Responsibilities include controlling access, coordinating vessel movements, monitoring security systems, and handling emergency calls along with report generation. POST background checks and TWIC are required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; strong work ethic and ability to multitask emphasized.
• Prior experience in or with port operations or law enforcement is desirable.
• POST background investigation and TWIC card are required/desired for position.

Responsibilities

• Monitor radio frequencies and security cameras for emergencies or incidents.
• Produce and maintain incident, visitor, radio traffic, and vessel movement reports.

• Handle emergency and non-urgent calls, prioritize and direct to appropriate personnel.
• Dispatch Port Police staff per guidelines and manage status of field personnel.

Job description

The Stockton Port District is seeking a trustworthy and multitasking individual to join our team as a Police Support Technician.

Under direct supervision, the Police Support Technicians provide technical support to Port Police personnel in ensuring the safety of life and property in and around Port District grounds.

Examples of Duties:

• Controls access to Port entrances, verifying all persons allowed entry provide proper identification in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations.
• Coordinates vessel movement and docking; maintains radio contact with vessels transiting the Stockton Deepwater Ship Channel; provides information to vessels; assists vessels by ordering tugboats and maintaining contact with lead linesmen.
• Monitors local agency radio frequencies and security cameras, keeping alert for any emergency or unusual incidents occurring on or around Port District grounds.
• Produces and maintains various reports and logs dealing with incidents, visitors, radio traffic, vessel movement and security.
• Receives confidential criminal history information via telephone from other agencies or operates/monitors CLETS terminal; maintains required certification.
• Receives urgent and non-urgent calls from public and other public agencies requesting Port police assistance; prioritizes and screens calls for service to determine nature of problems; provides factual information to responding police personnel; directs calls or notifies appropriate personnel as necessary.
• Dispatches Port Police staff according to established guidelines; maintains status of field staff; advises Port Police and other agencies as applicable of emergency situations and other law enforcement related matters.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Must have the ability to satisfactorily attain the knowledge, skills and abilities to adequately perform standards of the job within an acceptable timeframe as determined by the Chief of Police.

Education and/or Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent plus education and/or work experience demonstrating strong work ethic, ability to learn and effective multi-tasking skills. Prior experience at or associated with the Port of Stockton is qualifying. Work experience and education with an emphasis in criminal justice or law enforcement highly desirable. Other relevant experience may be considered.

Certificates, Licenses or Registrations:

Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license and be insurable under the Port’s liability policy or provide other insurance acceptable to the Port. Must pass POST background investigation to include credit check and be able to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.

About the Port:

The Port of Stockton was established under the California Harbors and Navigation Code. It is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners (Board). Four commissioners are appointed by the Stockton City Council and three by the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors. The day-to-day administration of Port operations is under the direction of the Port Director who is selected by and serves at the will of the Board.

The Port is a deep-water port located seventy-five miles inland from San Francisco, in the agricultural heartland of California in San Joaquin County. The Port owns and operates marine terminals which are used to load and unload cargo from ships, barges, trucks, and railcars, and to store cargos. Cargos handled by the Port include various dry and liquid bulk, general, and project cargos in the agriculture, foods, infrastructure and building, energy, and renewable fuels commodity sectors. The Port also leases land and warehousing facilities to a number of diverse tenants. Port operations are self-supporting and receive no direct tax subsidies.
