Job Title: Police Support Assistant I

Type of Assignment: Temporary Assignment

MiraCosta College is accepting applications for temporary, hourly Police Support Assistant I’s to substitute as needed on the Oceanside Campus. Substitutes may be asked to work anytime from Monday through Saturday, 7:00 am – 3:00 pm or 3:00 pm – 11:00 pm.


RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:
MiraCosta College Board Policy 7800: Employee Residency requires all classified staff, administrators, and temporary/hourly short-term employees to maintain and permanently reside in a principal place of residence in the state of California that is within two hundred (200) road miles from the employee’s regularly assigned district worksite.


Location: Oceanside, Cardiff, and/or Carlsbad, California

Salary Range: $27.73 per hour (range 14, step 1) on the 2024-2025 classified salary schedule.


Short-term, temporary employees may be eligible for Healthy Families Sick Leave, and enrollment in a retirement system.


Basic Function

Under general supervision, perform a wide variety of responsible public counter and clerical support duties including accepting payments and updating student records in the Police Department; provide information and assistance to students and the public; answer non-emergency calls and support dispatchers as assigned; and perform related duties as assigned.


Essential Duties
  1. Answer, screen and refer non-emergency telephone calls; assist students, faculty and visitors at a public counter.
  2. Receive and process payments for parking passes, citations and fees.
  3. Provide routine and specialized administrative support duties.
  4. Operate computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems to receive and transmit non-emergency calls from the public.
  5. Process lost-and-found items and broadcast test messages during critical incidents.
  6. Process purchase requisitions and contact facilities or custodial staff as needed.

Knowledge of
  1. Principles and practices used in customer service and public relations.
  2. Operations and services of a police department.
  3. Police terminology and relevant laws.
  4. Office administration practices and procedures.
  5. Basic accounting techniques and student recordkeeping practices.

Ability to
  1. Receive requests for emergency and non-emergency services.
  2. Establish priorities and work effectively.
  3. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  4. Maintain confidentiality of records.

Education & Experience

To be eligible for these assignments, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  2. Some college-level courses in criminal justice.
  3. One year of clerical or administrative support experience; experience in a law enforcement agency is preferred.

Licenses & Other Requirements

A valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the district’s vehicle insurance program. CJIS Security NexTest certification required within six months of hire.


Physical Effort

Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending, and occasional light lifting.


Emotional Effort

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and deal with changing deadlines.


Working Conditions

Primarily business office environment with frequent public contact.
