Job description

The Ideal Candidate

The City of El Segundo Police Department is recruiting a motivated Police Service Officer (PSO) to be an integral part of our team. The PSO may be assigned to various administrative or field roles such as Animal Control, Court Liaison, Parking Enforcement, and may also serve as a jailer. The PSO should be capable of working under supervision but also thrive with minimal oversight, demonstrating strong initiative and sound decision-making skills.

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following duties and responsibilities. This list is illustrative and not exhaustive.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Book prisoners, including fingerprinting, searching, tagging personal property, and assigning jail cells based on classification; prepare booking and charge forms; conduct jail checks; oversee inmate movements; manage visitations; prepare court packages.
  2. Order and stock jail supplies; document inmate misconduct and emergencies; serve meals; clean cells.
  3. Handle public requests at the counter and by phone; provide policy and service information; receive reports; manage inmate and property data; process bail payments and issue receipts; release property and impounded vehicles.
  4. Patrol the city observing for violations or incidents; capture animals using appropriate methods; pick up dead animals; issue citations, licenses, warnings, and notices.
  5. Control or direct traffic; issue parking citations; impound vehicles; appear in court; operate city vehicles.
  6. Manage records including sorting, filing, copying, and distributing; provide police reports; type correspondence and reports; answer calls and route messages.

Working Conditions:
  • Physical contact with inmates and arrestees

  • Animal control tasks may require lifting up to 75 pounds, running, climbing fences, and crawling
Minimum Qualifications:

Combination of experience and training likely to provide the necessary knowledge and skills. Typically:

  • One year of public interaction experience
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid California Driver's license
  • Completion of a three-week jail operations course and certification by the Department of Corrections

In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, employees may be asked to respond as disaster service workers.

All employees must complete a 12-month probationary period to attain permanent status.
