ANNOUNCED FOR: NASSAU COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT
SALARY: $34,679 - $70,949 (under the current collective bargaining agreement)
Under direct supervision, the position requires the use of judgement in receiving training and assisting in performing various support functions.
NOTE: This position requires the ability to lift objects weighing up to sixty (60) pounds.
This is a competitive class trainee position. The period of trainee service shall be not less than one year nor more than two years from the date of appointment from an appropriate eligible list, the service to be of such designated length as to satisfy the training and experience requirement for the Police Service Aide. Upon the satisfactory completion of the designated trainee service, which also serves as the probationary period, and successful completion of a 40 hour training program at the Nassau County Police Academy, the Police Service Aide Trainee shall attain permanent status as Police Service Aide.
NOTE: Trainee positions are subject to Rules XVII and XIX of the Nassau County Civil Service Rules in relation to term of probation.
Must be met on or before the filing date:
Training and Experience: Graduation from high school.
Necessary Special Requirement: Continuing possession of an appropriate class, valid Driver's License issued by the State of New York.
NOTE: According to Civil Service Law, section 54 which became effective September 4, 2024, applicants who are within 12 months of meeting the minimum age or attaining the minimum educational requirements following the date of examination may take the civil service exam, but will be restricted from certification until such a time that the minimum age or educational requirements are met.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, DRUG TESTING AND FINGERPRINTING: According to Civil Service Law and/or policy of this Commission, a background investigation (which may include a polygraph examination), substance abuse screening and fingerprint check is required. Each candidate will be required to provide a waiver and release permitting the Commission to disclose to the candidate's current employer any positive test results. The Division of Criminal Justice Services requires each fingerprint search request to be accompanied by a fee. This fee must be submitted by the candidate. The fee is usually $75.00. The refusal of any candidate to submit the required fee shall, in itself, disqualify a candidate from being placed on an eligible list for certification. You will be instructed at the appropriate time when and how to submit payment.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: The included assessments are intended to evaluate skills and abilities identified as important to the effective performance of the Police Service Aide Trainee position.
Mathematical Computation Assessment: This assessment measures the ability to solve basic arithmetic problems (add, subtract, multiply, divide) involving operations with whole numbers, decimals, percents, and simple fractions.
Following Written Directions Assessment: This assessment measures the ability to read and follow a set of rules. Questions require candidates to determine the appropriate action to take based on the set of rules given.
Forms Checking Assessment: This assessment measures the ability to verify the accuracy of completed forms by comparison to written information.
Coding Assessment: This assessment measures the ability to code information according to a prescribed system.
Work Attitudes Assessment: This assessment measures several characteristics (e.g., Conscientiousness, Getting Along With Others) found to be important to the job of a Police Service Aide Trainee. Questions will ask each candidate to rate the extent to which a number of statements apply to him or herself.
Minimal computer skills are needed to be able to participate in the examination. Item content on the included assessments will not be subject to review and detailed item-level information will not be provided to candidates for purposes of review.
Preparation Materials: All eligible candidates will be given access to a prepared study guide for the written assessments. The study guide will contain additional information about the assessments. Instructions for how to access the study guide will be provided via email to all eligible candidates approximately two weeks after the last day of filing.
NOTE: Candidates will not be permitted to bring any supplies (e.g., pencils, study guide, personal timer) or electronic communication devices (e.g., cell phones, smart watches, laptops) to the administration site. All necessary materials and equipment will be provided to candidates once on-site for the assessment administration.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
1. APPLYING: Inquiries should be directed to the Executive Director, Nassau County Civil Service Commission. The Commission does not accept responsibility for non-delivery or delivery delays of emails due to issues with your email account. The Commission reserves the right to reject for lateness or to accept applications filed after the advertised filing period.
2. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: The burden of establishing qualifications to the satisfaction of the Commission shall be upon the applicant. For the purpose of meeting the training and experience requirement of any examination, no credits shall be given for any work experience which is determined by the Commission to have been gained or acquired in violation of the provisions of the Civil Service Law.
Where required, certificates, licenses, and military separation papers (DD214) must be submitted with your application. Proof of claimed education (copy of your high school diploma, Military, GED, New York State or comparable Equivalency Diploma) may be required to be submitted with the application. If education beyond high school is required, official transcripts must be submitted directly to us by the school.
College education is considered at the rate of 30 credits completed per year.
For open competitive qualifications only, paid experience, if other than on a full time basis will be prorated.
Volunteer experience may be accepted, if verifiable, and the experience claimed must have been in a structured program. Documentation signed by an official of the agency indicating hours per week, level of work, etc. must be provided.
Where additional experience may be substituted for an academic degree/diploma, the interpretation of the note, generally, is that for a full substitution, the underlying educational requirement for a Master’s degree must be a Bachelor’s degree; for a Bachelor’s degree, it must be a High School Diploma/High School Equivalency Diploma; for a High School Diploma, it must be satisfactory completion of tenth or eighth grade education, as appropriate.
3. THE EXAMINATION: Approved candidates will be notified when and where to appear for examination. If an application is rejected, the candidate will be notified.
4. ELIGIBLE LISTS, PLACEMENT, AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR APPOINTMENT TO CERTAIN POSITIONS: Vacancies: Eligible lists resulting from examinations may be limited to a sufficient number of passing candidates to fill vacancies. Additional candidates may be processed for certification from the lists as the need arises.
All eligible lists shall be established for four years unless the Executive Director deems it appropriate to expire an eligible list before the end of the four-year term from establishment.
Candidates must be psychologically and physically fit to perform the duties required for the position. Medical or psychological examination may be required.
When there is a need for employees to fill vacancies on a part time basis the eligible list may be canvassed for that purpose.
Changing conditions occasionally result in certification and offers of employment at higher or lower salaries than those announced.
Special Requirement for Appointment to CERTAIN positions in School Districts and BOCES: Per Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a school district or BOCES as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required.
