Important Qualification: *IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS ROLE, YOU MUST HAVE YOUR BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training) CERTIFICATION*

Incentive: This position is eligible for a $15,000 commitment incentive spread over a two-year period.

Summary:

Protect and serve the patients, staff, and visitors of UNC Hospitals through law enforcement and crime prevention. Patrol specific campus locations, investigate complaints and violations of laws and ordinances, and perform specialized duties to deter crime and promote safety. Lead and direct the daily work of Police Officers.

Responsibilities:
  1. Act as supervisor of the Work Unit in the absence of the squad Lieutenant; assist in managing divisions such as Criminal Investigations, Patrol, or Community Services.
  2. Respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
  3. Issue and carry out oral and written instructions.
  4. Communicate effectively with the public, legal representatives, police personnel, and hospital staff, patients, and visitors.
  5. Prepare and review activity and incident reports for completeness and detail.
  6. Apply UNC regulations, and local, state, and federal laws in investigations.
  7. Serve as Department Quarter Master for uniforms, equipment, and supplies.
  8. Represent the department at meetings and document proceedings.
  9. Complete special projects as assigned by the Command Staff, including research and reporting.
  10. Patrol UNC Hospitals properties, respond to complaints, and investigate violations.
  11. Participate in annual goal setting and address issues related to crime and community safety using problem-solving methods.
  12. Investigate extraordinary conditions or incidents on campus and hospital property.
  13. Document all contacts and activities using the OSSI Records Management System.
  14. Conduct foot patrols, analyze crime trends, and develop preventative strategies.
  15. Develop and manage crime reduction programs and community education initiatives.
  16. Apply the SARA model for problem-solving and document efforts.
  17. Conduct criminal investigations, interviews, evidence collection, and court testimony.
  18. Enforce traffic laws, investigate accidents, and manage traffic flow.
  19. Serve as Training Officer, coordinating officer training and in-service sessions.
  20. Maintain current BLET certification and attend relevant training.
  21. Participate in career development and adhere to departmental chain of command.
Other Information:

Education: No formal education required if other qualifications are met.

Licensure/Certification: Must have or obtain North Carolina Law Enforcement certification within 12 months; valid NC Driver’s License; certifications in OC Spray, TASER, CPI, and CIT within 6 months; pass department qualification with duty weapon within 6 months.

Experience & Skills: Must meet physical and psychological requirements; effective communication, legal knowledge, physical ability for arrests, operation of law enforcement vehicles, search procedures, judgment in use of force, and organizational skills.
