Job description

The Police Sergeant, under direction, supervises officers and police personnel and enforces, prevents, and investigates violations of the law and University rules and regulations.

This position may pay more than the listed salary depending on qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities:
  1. Supervises assigned police officers and personnel. Evaluates, counsels, and advises subordinates. Approves subordinate leave. Examines and approves reports and case files. May supervise security officers at special events and serve as a sergeant in various departmental roles.
  2. Disseminates administrative directives and policies, ensures implementation, patrols campus, and acts as a liaison for other agencies.
  3. Investigates offenses, arrests offenders, prepares reports, manages crime scenes and evidence, and provides training to officers.
  4. Attends meetings, performs administrative duties, and may participate in committees and review boards.
  5. Testifies in courts and hearings, and engages with the community on law enforcement topics.
Required Education & Experience
  • High School diploma or GED, plus 45 college credit hours from an accredited institution or equivalent experience. Up to 30 credits may be substituted with law enforcement or military experience.
  • Experience as a law enforcement officer, including two years in campus law enforcement at an institution of higher education, meeting TCOLE certification standards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to work cooperatively, communicate effectively, and operate under stress.
Certifications & Licenses:
  • Texas TCOLE intermediate or advanced certification.
  • Valid Texas 'C' vehicle license or ability to obtain within 30 days.
Other Requirements:
  • Meet TCOLE licensing standards.
  • Work beyond regular hours, including weekends.
  • Pass exams, psychological, physical, and background checks.
  • Maintain excellent physical health.
