Job summary

The City of Murphy Police Department is seeking a Sergeant to oversee shift-level patrol operations and supervise personnel. This supervisory role supports coaching, mentoring, and enforcing department policies while maintaining public safety across the beat.

Appointed by the Chief of Police and reporting to the Operations Lieutenant, the Sergeant leads daily operations, coordinates training, and ensures readiness of equipment and personnel for routine and critical incidents.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Intermediate Peace Officer License issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
  • Seven years’ experience as a Texas Peace Officer.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols specific beat assignment, if necessary, to promote public safety.
  • Promotes a positive Department image through community-policing efforts and public engagement.
  • Provides supervision, training, guidance, and direction to assigned personnel.
  • Conducts shift briefings and communicates directives, policies, and training information.
  • Reviews crime analysis information and trends to develop enforcement strategies and responses.
  • Inspects equipment to ensure proper maintenance and readiness.
  • Performs the essential duties of a Police Officer as needed.
  • Coaches, mentors, and develops personnel; reports performance concerns.
  • Supervises activities within the shift/unit and coordinates resources.
  • Reviews police reports and ensures accuracy and compliance with policies.
  • Responds to critical incidents and emergencies; provides supervisory direction.
  • Assigns work activities and staffing decisions to meet needs.
  • Identifies improvement opportunities and recommends solutions.
  • Coordinates with department personnel on policies and laws.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and provides training and development.
  • Monitors officer performance through observation and reviews.
  • Maintains required training per TCOLE standards.
  • Supports subordinate development and safety initiatives.
  • Keeps up-to-date with best practices and law enforcement methods.
  • Adheres to policies, safety rules, and Administrative Orders.
