Job description

I. JOB OVERVIEW

The Police Sergeant, Investigations Unit, position will be the supervisor for the Detective Branch, part of the Division of Safety and Operations within the George Washington University. This position supervises operations within the GW Police Department during an assigned shift or assignment by providing direction and guidance to subordinate staff within the Investigations Unit. The incumbent will manage the day-to-day operations of the Investigations Unit, including scheduling, assignments, evaluations, and distribution of responsibilities. This position will report to the Police Lieutenant, Investigations Unit.

Core responsibilities are but not limited to:

• Plans, directs, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in investigations, crime prevention, community relations, threat assessment, and related services and activities. This position will be the primary point of contact for threat assessment, and lead internal investigations assigned to the investigations unit, including criminal investigations, behavioral threat assessment investigations, assigned follow-up investigations, and complete investigations on their own.
• Manages and participates in training of the investigations unit, as well as assisting in preliminary investigation, interview, and report writing the patrol branch.
• Reviews all police reports to ensure the elements of the crime are present and that all classifications are accurate.
• Assists with the maintenance of investigative files and reports on persons arrested or barred from the university.
• Provides guidance to Patrol Operations with regard to investigations and report writing activities.
• Ensures that all incident reports and arrest activities are properly documented, that staff comply with all mandated policies and procedures, assesses staff development needs, and provides 24-hour administrative on-call coverage regarding serious incidents/activities occurring within the university.
• May be assigned to participate in special covert operations, if needed.
• This is a management position at the university that, in addition to leading a work unit, leads and supervises staff directly, makes hiring decisions, provides coaching, training and mentoring, manages performance and determines future staffing needs.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 5 years of relevant professional experience as a police officer; internally or within a federal, state, military, or municipality to include at least three years of functional supervisory experience is necessary, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus one year of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must meet the requirements to possess a SPO License through DC's Metropolitan Police Department, Security Officers Management Branch (SOMB) as described in DC Municipal Regulations Title 6-A, Chapter 11 within 120 days of employment.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications

• Candidates will have completed 5 or more years as a trained police investigator with an accredited municipal, county, federal or university law enforcement agency.
• Possession of a District of Columbia Special Police Commission or the ability to obtain a commission within 180 days of employment.
• Prior to employment, the final candidate will need to successful complete a physical, drug screen and mental examination, which has been approved by the GW Police Department
• Must possess a Police Officer Standards & Training (P.O.S.T) police training academy certification with a minimum of 700 training hours.
• Must have a valid driver's license and be eligible to drive GW vehicles as per University Policy for entire duration of employment within this role.
• Proof of U.S. citizenship and at least 21 years of age as required by the MPD, SOMB.
• Must be available to work rotating shifts.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to supervise and assist a staff of detectives with knowledge of GWPD personnel and evaluation requirements.
• Ability to train and mentor a staff of detectives in investigation and interviewing techniques, in use of investigative technological resources and implementation of new resources, and in use of investigative databases, both internal and external to GW.
• Ability to establish and maintain relationships with all GWPD divisions and outside agencies and departments.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Proficient knowledge of criminal law, rules, and the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, or Clery Act Experience in a University or comparable non-profit environment is preferred.

Hiring Range

$67,660.76 - $89,572.27
