Summary of Functions

Supervises administrative issues of Kalispel Tribal Police Department. Supervise Police Patrolmen during assigned shifts. Assigning Patrol Shift Schedules. Discipline and award officers as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administers and clarifies policies and procedures – set forth by the Kalispel Tribal Police Department,
  • Responsible for assisting the Director and Assistant Director in writing, implementing, and updating policies and procedures to meet the continuing changes for Kalispel Tribe enterprises and the safety and security of Tribal community members and assets.
  • Responsible for reporting to the Assistant Director of Public Safety for noncompliance with company or department policies.
  • Responsible for the completion of weekly payroll and correction of payroll-related issues.
  • Creates reviews and distributes reports, Court Orders, and Warrants.
  • Manages and accounts for controlled supplies issued to the Department
  • Monitors required reports needed from patrolmen for timely completion and accuracy.
  • Writes and delivers patrol evaluations, ensuring they are completed promptly.
  • Attends department and team meetings to ensure effective communication.
  • Responsible for the operations of the shift, including scheduling, training, corrective action, etc.
  • Responsible for ensuring Training Officers receive and become proficient in supervisor techniques.
  • Guides Tribal business operations during emergencies up to and including evacuations.
  • Makes recommendations for any of the previous.
  • Assists Directors with special investigations and/or technical reports. Completes special projects.
  • Ensure control/protection of company assets.
  • Available and willing to work any changes in hours deemed necessary.
  • Responsible for maintaining a consistent, regular good attendance record.
  • May be required to be a panelist for the internal review hearings and testimony in Tribal, State, and Federal Courts.
  • Ensures the highest possible standards of guest satisfaction and officer relations are maintained and carried out fairly and equitably, conducive to that goal.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Responsibilities include interviewing, training, and scheduling patrol officers; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and corrective actions of officers; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Carries out supervisory responsibilities per the organization’s policies and applicable law. Directly supervises 5 to 10 Members of the Kalispel Tribal Police Department.

Education
  • An associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from Two-year College or technical school is required.
Experience
  • Five-year specialized experience and/or training in law enforcement; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Supervisory experience in law enforcement, security, or military program.
  • Prerequisite: Minimum of two years in a supervisory position or five years of law enforcement experience.
  • Knowledge of RCW and Criminal Jurisdiction in Indian Country
  • Direct experience in an organizational development role is strongly preferred.
Skills
  • Must be computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Programs and other computer software.
  • Ability to analyze and solve complex management problems having non-standard solutions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with public officials, department heads, associates, and the public.
  • Skill in effectively communicating information through verbal and written correspondence to patrolman managers, clients, customers, and the public, including writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.
  • Skill in solving practical problems and dealing with situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Skills in assessing operation, program, staffing, and fiscal needs.
  • Skill in identifying and resolving administrative problems under pressure conditions.
Other Requirements
  • Possess certification of completion of an accredited State or Federal Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Have the ability to obtain certification from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the State of Washington.
  • Criminal Justice Training Programs.
  • Attended or can attend within one-year Police First Line Supervision Training.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification or ability to obtain within six months.
  • Hep A/B recommended but not required.
  • Must pass a written and oral exam designed for Police Sergeant Position that meets State and/or Federal requirements.
  • Work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Must successfully pass a written exam designated for Police Sergeant Position that meets State and/or Federal requirements.

Travel Requirements

Typical travel time is generally two weeks or less. Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state may be required for training or investigative purposes.
