Job summary

The City of Signal Hill is seeking candidates to become Police Officers through the P.O.S.T. academy pathway. This is a civilian training track designed to prepare recruits for sworn status with full salary, benefits, and promotional opportunity upon successful academy completion.

Selected recruits will train at a P.O.S.T.-certified academy, with a 12-month probation and extensive physical requirements. A comprehensive background check and medical evaluations are part of the process.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to completion of high school.
• U.S. citizen or resident alien who has applied for citizenship at the time of application.
• Must have reached 21st birthday upon completion of the police academy.
• Valid driver license and a clean driving record are required.

Responsibilities

• Attend a P.O.S.T. certified basic police academy designated by the City of Signal Hill to obtain formal training in police work.
• Perform non-sworn work in jail operation, dispatch, property and evidence handling, service desk, community relations or other areas as assigned.
• Learn to patrol assigned areas and conduct investigations, interviewing victims, complainants, and witnesses; handle complaints and disturbances.
• Learn traffic enforcement and accident investigation methods, control traffic, and perform crowd control or special events duties.
• Prepare and maintain reports; obtain and process evidence; testify in court when required; provide information in non-criminal situations.
