  • Step 1 (upon graduating the police academy): $73,000/annually - $35.10/HR
GENERAL SUMMARY

Provides responsible law enforcement services that fulfill the mission and specific purposes of the department and City.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

This position reports to the supervisor responsible for the area of assignment. This is a non-supervisory position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provides excellent service and protection to all members of the Lake Worth Community, including City staff, the general public, and all other work contacts.
  • Afford all citizens highly efficient and professional protection and services
  • Accept responsibility for crime prevention/awareness, recognizing that it is more desirable to deter crime rather than to react to it
  • Investigate crime and incidents impartially using every legal means and make the truth known
  • Strive for voluntary compliance to laws and ordinances through the use of responsible enforcement, public education and role modeling
  • Promote an attitude of friendliness, helpfulness, tact, understanding and caring in the performance of assigned duties
  • Communicate cooperatively and openly with the community
  • Communicate openly within the organization; be a team player and offer mutual support to facilitate the accomplishment of higher goals of community protection and service over individual accomplishments. This same spirit of inter-organizational cooperation is carried further to cooperate with other law enforcement agencies and other governmental units.

  • Performs police-community relations activities
  • Patrols an assigned area, by vehicle or on foot, to prevent crimes and enforce laws and ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency calls and routine complaints and disturbances and takes necessary, lawful action.
  • Directs traffic, operates traffic monitoring equipment (Radar/ Lidar), conducts traffic stops.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations of traffic crashes, criminal offenses, and incidents disrupting public peace.
  • Interviews witnesses, complainants, victims and suspects and takes statements and affidavits.
  • Makes referrals to Child Protective Services/ Investigations (CPS/I) when appropriate.
  • Keeps records of activities and prepares reports concerning crimes, complaints, traffic crashes, and investigations.
  • Responds to the public’s calls for assistance and takes necessary action, including performing first aid.
  • Processes prisoners, including fingerprinting, photographing, ensuring magistration by a judge, approving City bonds, searching prisoners, recording and securing the prisoner’s property, and transporting prisoners to appropriate facility.
  • Appears/Testifies in court and before grand juries as necessary/required
  • Shares information and works with other law enforcement agencies as directed and appropriate
  • Conducts security checks of businesses and residential areas
  • Tags and logs in evidence
  • Performs upkeep and simple maintenance on department vehicles
  • Assists with special activities and events
  • Educates the public on issues of crime prevention and awareness including conducting inspections, classes, and speeches relative to crime prevention, safety education, and community involvement.
  • Performs such other law enforcement, investigative, technical, and educational duties as may be assigned.
  • Serves in extension of current duties as required for emergency management, particularly in the areas of staff alerting, communication, public warning, and law enforcement.
  • Should an officer be assigned to a specialized unit or transferred to another division, those specific duties will be discussed in detail by their supervisor and documented accordingly.
  • May provide dispatch relief when necessary
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Certification.
OR
  • Be eligible for certification from TCOLE (Texas Commission on Law Enforcement). (Please refer to Texas Administrative Code Title 37 Chapter 217.1 for clarification.) AND
  • 45 college credit hours with a 2.0 GPA or higher from an accredited college or university, OR
  • Minimum two years in the United States Armed Forces with Honorable Discharge or active reserve status, OR
  • Two years of experience with the City of Lake Worth with a minimum of two consecutive annual evaluations with a rating of meeting expectations or above.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Valid Class C Texas driver license; valid Texas Basic Peace Officer Certification

Must be a U.S. Citizen

PHYSICAL ABILITIES
