GARDEN GROVE'S POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Police Department consists of 182 sworn staff including a chief, three captains, seven lieutenants, 23 sergeants, and 148 police officers, in addition to civilian personnel. After sufficient experience, specialization is available in areas such as Patrol, Investigations, Juvenile Services, Motorcycle Traffic Enforcement, Accident Investigations, Vice-Narcotic Enforcement, Community Impact Unit, and Canine Handling. An extensive in-service training program provides officers with continuous instruction in police techniques. Patrol officers work a modified 3/12.5 shift and others a 4/10 shift.

BEING A POLICE RECRUIT

Successful candidates will be hired as Police Recruits in a non-sworn capacity and placed in a California POST-approved Basic Academy. Recruits receive 984 hours of rigorous training. They are eligible for medical and dental benefits during the academy. Post-graduation, performance and evaluations determine appointment as a sworn officer. All officers serve an 18-month probation. Starting salary is $7,432/month with benefits, bilingual incentives, and educational bonuses.

Duties While in the Police Academy

Recruits attend a POST-approved Basic Academy with intensive training including law enforcement techniques, laws, physical training, first aid, and equipment handling, providing an overview of criminal justice and police work.

Requirements

• Age: Must be 21 upon academy completion; at least 20 at application.
• Education: High school diploma or G.E.D.
• Physical: Excellent physical condition; vision 20/100 correctable to 20/30; no color blindness; hearing within specified limits.
• Work Authorization: Eligible to work in the U.S.
• Driver's License: Valid California Class C with acceptable record.
• Other: Legally able to carry a firearm; no felony convictions.
• Skills & Abilities: Attention to detail, communication, record keeping, customer service, teamwork.
• Bilingual: Spanish, Vietnamese, or Korean speakers preferred.
