Under supervision in a non-sworn training capacity, develops qualifications for a police career; receives instruction at the Long Beach Police Academy, including policies, law, physical fitness, use of firearms, arrest procedures, community relations, and emergency vehicle operation.
The Academy is CA POST accredited. Candidates may perform non-sworn functions such as traffic and crowd control during training. The curriculum includes community-oriented policing, legal training, crisis intervention, de-escalation, defensive tactics, use of force, emergency vehicle operations, and physical fitness.
Recent college coursework, bilingual ability (Spanish, Khmer, Tagalog) preferred.
Includes application review, written exams (NTN or PELLETB), with scores valid for 12 months. Veterans and disabled veterans receive additional points. Successful candidates are invited to the Police Academy orientation.
