Job description

Join our team! The Flower Mound Police Department is accepting applications for Police Officer Recruits. Must love making a difference in people's lives, serving the community, and working with a great team.

The Recruit is a non-sworn Police Department employee in a trainee capacity. Incumbents are required to attend a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certified academy to develop the minimum qualifications necessary to assume a position as a sworn police officer.

WORK ACTIVITIES:

  1. Attends and successfully completes all required phases of basic training through a certified Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) academy.
  2. Operates and maintains vehicle and personal equipment.
  3. Attends training activities and receives classroom and field instruction in job related subjects.
  4. Maintains a positive, friendly and effective working relationship with the general public and co-workers.
  5. Reports any unsafe, hazardous, or perilous conditions to proper authority.
  6. Adheres to the personnel, safety, and departmental policies, procedures, and Administrative Orders.
  7. Informs supervisor of all work activities.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • Must meet all TCOLE minimum requirements.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License and driving record must be in compliance with Town policy.
  • No convictions involving family violence.
  • No convictions of a Class A misdemeanor or greater under the Texas Penal Code or any comparable state or federal law, to include the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
  • No convictions of a Class B misdemeanor under the Texas Penal Code or any comparable state or federal law, to include the Uniform Code of Military Justice, within the past ten (10) years.
  • No criminal charges pending or under indictment for any criminal offense.
  • No marijuana use within the last two years and no other illegal drug use within the last five years.
  • Not on probation for any criminal offense.
  • Not have more than three chargeable accidents within the last three years, or any combination of chargeable accidents and moving violations which equal four or more in the last three years.

EDUCATION:

  • Must successfully complete police academy training as mandated by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement in exchange for employment with the Town; must reimburse the Town the full cost of such training and any required inoculations if employee separates from the Town before the third anniversary of hire date.

To meet the minimum qualifications for this posting, one of these will need to apply to your current status:

  • You have a minimum of 30 college hours with a GPA of 2.0 or higher from an institution of higher education as defined by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Rule 211.1(a)(3).
  • You have a minimum of 2 years of experience in the United States Armed Forces with an Honorable Discharge OR an active member of the United States Military Reserve.
  • You are a current Flower Mound Police Department Detention Services Officer, Animal Services Officer or Communications Officer who meets minimum standards for hire as a Police Officer Recruit (FMPD Employment Standards and Qualifications, Administrative Directive 101.008).

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.*

  • Must have good hand-eye coordination to operate police equipment (vehicles, weapons, radios, etc.).
  • Must be able to follow oral and written directives.
  • Must be able to see; write; hear; talk; run; climb; bend; have vision correctable to 20/20 binocular; be able to distinguish between red, green, and yellow in order to accurately describe suspects and vehicles and to identify traffic lights and sign colors; physically restrain a person, endure extended periods of exertion, and sit for long periods of time; observe and remember names, faces, and details of incidents; and work in adverse environmental conditions.* Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • Bilingual skills are preferred.
  • Must have excellent communicative skills, both oral and written.
  • Must be able to communicate courteously and effectively with other people and maintain a pleasant and friendly personality; exercise good judgment and make competent decisions in all activities; work flexible hours and accept on-call duty status; and maintain confidentiality with criminal and investigative information.

HIPAA COMPLIANCE STATEMENT:
All employees who have access to health information whose confidentiality is protected by the HIPAA Privacy Rule must have an understanding and knowledge of the Privacy Rule that corresponds to their job responsibilities. Employees who violate the requirements of the HIPAA Privacy Rule will be subject to discipline, up to and including termination.

HIRING PROCESS:

  • Written Examination measuring the ability to learn police information, observation and memory, written communication, reading comprehension, and analytical ability. Information regarding the optional practice test and study guide will be sent out after the invitations to test have been sent. The written exam date/time is TBD.
  • Row Evaluation (Applicants must pass at the 50th percentile based on standardized normative data charts using the Concept 2 Rower.)
  • Interview with Background Investigator
  • Oral Review Board
  • Background Investigation (Applicants who successfully pass this step will be given a Conditional Offer of Employment)
  • Polygraph Examination
  • Psychological Evaluation
  • Medical Examination / Drug Screen

The order of the steps may vary according to departmental needs and schedules.

If you have been disqualified or were previously disqualified from the hiring process, you may still be eligible to apply to this position. The length of time you are disqualified depends on the reason for which you were disqualified. If you failed the written test, physical fitness, or the Oral Board, you are eligible to reapply to the next posting. You are eligible to reapply after one year if you failed the psychological examination. Any other disqualification may have resulted in a minimum disqualification of one year or possible permanent disqualification.
