GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, performs standard police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances, including routine patrol, preliminary investigations, and traffic regulation duties.
After successful completion of the Academy, Police Recruits will be reclassified as Police Officers and placed in salary range 58, with an hourly rate of $29.8845 or $62,159.67 annually.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties ARE NOT an exhaustive list but a representative summary of primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbents may not perform all listed duties and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.
- Patrol assigned areas to provide security, crime prevention, and monitor for suspicious activities or persons; address repetitive problems or crimes; secure scenes and assist Fire and Medical personnel.
- Respond to citizen requests for assistance, enforce traffic laws, detect and apprehend violators, and ensure public safety; maintain departmental standards for vehicle and equipment maintenance.
- Enforce local, state, and federal laws, as well as municipal codes.
- Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls; interrogate and communicate with victims, witnesses, and suspects.
- Complete detailed reports and required paperwork accurately.
- Make arrests, transport and process suspects, victims, and prisoners; serve warrants and orders of protection.
- Respond to mental health calls, coordinate services, and transportation with mental health providers.
- Represent the City Police in court; prepare reports and testify as needed.
- Investigate crimes and accidents; secure and process scenes; identify and collect evidence.
- Participate in community and school outreach, providing education and information on law enforcement activities and resources.
- Assist other law enforcement agencies and organizations.
- Engage in problem-oriented policing by identifying issues, proposing solutions, and monitoring outcomes.
- Maintain professionalism, integrity, and adherence to departmental rules and regulations.
- May be assigned to special units such as Investigations, Training, K9, SWAT, School Resource, or Traffic Enforcement.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent, or any combination of training, education, or experience demonstrating potential to perform the duties.
- Must have physical strength and agility.
- Must obtain Arizona POST police officer certification and meet physical standards.
- Must be at least 21 years old upon completing the Police Academy.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- No felony convictions in Arizona or other states that would be considered felonies in Arizona.
- No convictions involving moral turpitude.
- Must obtain an Arizona driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Work involves potential danger; must act independently and exercise judgment in emergencies.
- Ability to complete police academy training, interpret laws, and apply regulations.
- Ability to prepare reports, operate computers, and communicate effectively via radio and in writing.
- Capable of gathering facts, conducting investigations, and handling evidence and interrogations.
- Proficiency in firearm use and following instructions.
Special Requirements: Must possess an Arizona driver’s license and have a clear criminal record.
Necessary Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of city geography, criminal justice system, investigation procedures, and legal protocols.
- Knowledge of hazardous materials, first aid, CPR, and criminal law.
- Skills in decision-making, maintaining composure, evidence collection, firearm handling, vehicle operation, and intercultural communication.
- Proficiency in computer use and report writing.
Physical Demands / Work Environment: Work outdoors and in various law enforcement settings; maintain physical fitness standards.
