Job summary

City of Hoover is seeking Police Officers to protect life and property, enforce laws, investigate crimes and accidents, and testify in court. Applicants must meet age, citizenship, education, and background-check requirements.

Qualified candidates will complete the Physical Agilities/Abilities Test, then a written exam on the same day; APOST certification must be attained within six months of hire. This role supports public safety and community outreach in Hoover.

Qualifications

• Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain and maintain City of Hoover Driver's Permit.
• U.S. Citizen.
• Ability to pass a background check.

• Spanish language ability preferred.

• Performs a variety of law enforcement duties to preserve public peace and prevent crimes, including protecting life and property, enforcing laws and ordinances, investigating crimes and accidents, making arrests, and providing credible testimony in court.
• Conducts traffic surveys to determine problem areas and assists in school and community functions, public relations activities, and other cases as assigned.

Performs a variety of law enforcement duties in the preservation of public peace and prevention of crimes, including protecting life and property, enforcing all laws and ordinances, investigating crimes and accidents, making arrests, providing credible testimony in various courts, conducting traffic surveys to determine problem areas, assisting in school and community functions, as well as, public relations activities, and other cases as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT PROCESS

In order to be eligible for employment with the Hoover Police Department a candidate must successfully complete the Physical Agilities/Abilities Test. STEP 1

Police Officer Physical Abilities/Agilities Test

Qualified applicants will be required to attend the Physical Agilities test on Friday, October 2, 2026 at 800 a.m.

STEP 2

Police Officer Written Examination

Applicants who pass the Physical Agilities Test will be scheduled to participate in a written examination the same day, scheduled for Friday, October 2, 2026, at 130 p.m.

APOST Certification

Qualified candidates must successfully complete APOST minimum standards, or attain APOST certification, within six months from date of employment with the City of Hoover Police Department. Please do not attach any documents other than cover letters, resumes or military form DD214.

Police Officer candidates who meet the minimum requirements and achieve a passing score on the written examination and physical agilities/abilities test will be further screened through our evaluation process, which considers related work experience, education, certifications and special training. Police Officer candidate finalists will then be evaluated based on personal interviews.
