Job Description

  • Laterals receive a $20,000 sign-on bonus paid in two increments.
  • Laterals receive 250 hours of personal leave available upon employment.
  • Laterals accrue paid personal leave time (holidays and vacation) each pay period, starting from the first day of employment, with accrual rates based on years of service:
    • 0-5 years = 19 hours/month
    • 6-10 years = 23 hours/month
    • 11-15 years = 24 hours/month
    • 16-20 years = 26 hours/month
    • 21+ years = 28 hours/month
  • Laterals receive 250 hours of sick leave upon employment.

SALARY INFORMATION/PREMIUMS:

BASE SALARY: $100,288 - $123,755 annually

  • The potential salary, including base pay and a 6% education premium, ranges from $106,305 - $131,180.
  • Education Premium: 4% for an Associate Degree; 6% for a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
  • The city contributes 1% of the base wage to a deferred compensation plan, with an additional 3% available upon passing the Physical Fitness Test.
  • The city contributes 3% to a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) VEBA Plan.
  • A 3% interpreter premium is available after completing the academy.
  • Take Home Car Program: Officers are issued a take-home vehicle after completing FTO.

Job Summary:

Perform general police duties involving protecting life and property, enforcing laws, investigating crimes, maintaining order, and engaging positively with the community. Work is performed independently and as part of a team, using general guidelines and independent judgment. Contribute to the department and city's vision, mission, and goals.

Supervision:

Reports to: Police Sergeant

Supervises: None

Essential Functions:

  • Contribute to a respectful and team-oriented environment.
  • Foster equity and inclusion by recognizing diverse needs and perspectives.
  • Respond to emergency and routine calls.
  • Patrol the city by various means, ensuring visibility and safety.
  • Answer 911 calls involving criminal and non-criminal activities.
  • Administer emergency first aid as needed.
  • Enforce traffic laws, identify suspicious persons, and take lawful action.
  • Use de-escalation techniques to promote compliance.
  • Maintain specialized equipment and proficiency in their use.
  • Enforce applicable laws professionally and respectfully.
  • Manage situations appropriately, respecting others' rights.
  • Maintain physical fitness and search for lost or wanted persons.
  • Direct traffic and determine lawful search or arrest actions.
  • Develop knowledge about offenders, recover property, and conduct investigations.
  • Appear in court, write reports, and assist citizens.
  • Follow directions from supervisors and participate in community activities and training.
  • Stay current with legislation, policies, and technology related to duties.
  • Maintain punctuality and perform other duties as required.

Education, Experience, and License Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 21 years old at the time of examination.
  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Lawful permanent resident or US citizen.
  • Pass entrance exam and meet medical and health standards.
  • Valid Washington driver’s license at hire.
  • Background check including polygraph, psychological, medical, and driving record.
  • Ability to qualify for ACCESS Certification.

Police Officer - Lateral:

  • At least 12 months of recent full-time, paid, commissioned police officer experience, or completion of a recognized academy due to previous agency constraints.
  • Must pass WSCJTC Basic Law Enforcement Academy or equivalent if experience is outside Washington.

Physical Demands:

  • Drive, perform field work, and work in various weather conditions.
  • Lift items up to 20 pounds, climb, run, and perform physical activities as required.

Work Environment:

  • Office and outdoor work, in all weather conditions, with varying noise levels.
  • Shift work included.
