Introduction

The Racine Police Department serves the City of Racine in Southeastern Wisconsin with a population of 77,816. We are a department that has adopted Community Oriented Policing and is a recognized leader in this area. Our Mission is to Protect Life and Property, Promote Community Partnerships, Build Trust, and Serve with Honor.

Position Purpose

In accordance with Local Ordinances, State Statutes, Federal Law, and departmental policies, performs a variety of police activities including personal danger and exposure to adverse conditions. Duties include dispensing information, arbitrating disputes, providing assistance, property protection, crime prevention, investigation, apprehending criminals, directing traffic, and other public safety services.

Essential Duties

  • Maintain preventative patrols in assigned areas, detect violators, initiate contacts, and communicate within the community.
  • Respond to calls for service, resolve disputes, and handle complaints through counseling or referrals.
  • Maintain community peace and respond to disturbances.
  • Provide police services such as public assistance, crime prevention programs, and reporting hazards.
  • Manage traffic flow, investigate accidents, enforce violations, and promote safety.
  • Conduct investigations, protect crime scenes, and follow-up on cases.
  • Enforce laws, make arrests, and issue citations.
  • Complete reports and testify in court.
  • Maintain reliable attendance.

Associated Duties

Perform other duties within responsibilities as required.

Environmental/Working Conditions

Work in adverse environmental conditions.

Qualifications

Lateral Transfer Qualifications

  • Active full-time law enforcement officer in the U.S.
  • Employed full-time for at least two years (excluding military).
  • U.S. citizen, at least 21 years old.
  • High School Diploma or GED, plus 60 college credits within 5 years of certification.
  • High moral character, no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
  • No residency requirement.
  • Complete all hiring stages as defined by the department.
  • Complete Wisconsin Physical Readiness Test or equivalent.
  • Out-of-state officers must pass Wisconsin Reciprocity Exam.

Disqualifiers

Conviction of domestic violence or recent serious traffic offenses disqualify.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Wisconsin and Racine laws.
  • Effective communication and discretion.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work under stress.
  • Skill in vehicle operation, firearm handling, and physical fitness.
  • Knowledge of city geography.

Physical Demands

Physical tasks include walking, bending, lifting, climbing, running, and quick movements.

Equipment

Vehicles, firearms, batons, handcuffs, chemical agents, computers, radios, phones.
