About the Police Department

The Pleasanton Police Department is committed to protecting life, preventing crime, and enhancing the quality of life in our community. The department is organized into three divisions: the Operations Division, the Investigations Division, and the Support Services Division.

  • The Operations Division includes patrol, the Traffic Unit, and the Alternate Response Unit (ARU).
  • The Investigation Division manages the Criminal Investigations Unit, Youth and Community Services, Personnel and Training, the Special Enforcement Unit, and our Community Outreach and social media. This division also handles in-service training and certified courses to ensure compliance with Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
  • The Support Services Division includes Dispatch and Records, responsible for public records management.

The department offers collateral assignments including SWAT, K-9, Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), among others.

Responsibilities
  1. Respond to and investigate criminal activities and incidents, including crime scene investigations and evidence collection.
  2. Issue warnings or citations for violations, investigate traffic incidents, and manage traffic flow.
  3. Conduct patrols to deter crime and address safety hazards.
  4. Handle found property, provide emergency aid, and maintain peace at public gatherings.
  5. Participate in surveillance, criminal investigations, and enforcement activities.
  6. Prepare and present case evidence in court.
  7. Provide training and evaluation for new officers.
  8. Perform administrative duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. required; college coursework in criminology or related field desirable.

Age: Must be at least 21 years old at appointment.

Certification: Basic Certificate from P.O.S.T. required at the time of appointment.

Vision/Hearing: 20/100 uncorrected vision, correctable to 20/30, normal color vision, and no significant hearing loss.

License: Valid Class C California driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Background: Satisfactory background investigation; no serious criminal convictions.

Pre-Employment Testing: Drug, medical, psychological, and polygraph exams. Candidates must have one year of law enforcement experience and a current P.O.S.T. certificate, or apply as an Academy Graduate if less experienced.

Additional: SB 960 allows non-citizens to apply if legally authorized to work in the U.S.
