Basic Course and progress through the Field Training Officer program, earning a starting salary commensurate with experience. The position requires passing written and physical exams, background investigation, and court appearances, with a focus on community safety and law enforcement duties across San Francisco.

Qualifications

• Must be a United States high school graduate or GED or CA High School Proficiency Examination, or have attained a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited college or university.
• Foreign college/university degree may be evaluated for equivalency by a credential evaluation service (NACES or AICE) and evaluation provided at application.
• Age: at least 20 years old at examination and at least 21 by appointment.
• Driver’s License: must possess and maintain a valid driver license throughout the process.
• Judicial Record: must not have felony, domestic violence, certain firearm-related misdemeanors, or be restricted from employment with SF City.

Responsibilities

• Prepares for work and inspects patrol car, equipment, and weapons.
• Patrols district on foot or car; operates MVTerminal; communicates with public.
• Responds to calls, resolves disputes, and administers first aid.
• Conducts investigations; interviews suspects, witnesses and victims; gathers case info.
• Promotes community policing; advises citizens on laws and rights; attends community meetings.
• Makes arrests/detains suspects; pursues suspects and coordinates with partner.
• Enforces traffic and parking violations; writes reports and maintains logs.
• Participates in court proceedings; reviews reports; meets with prosecutors.
• Performs related duties as required.
