The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates to fill important roles within our department. POSITION DUTIES

The Police Officer II at the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is the full performance level of law enforcement work enforcing laws, rules, and regulations governing the safety and protection of personnel and State property. Employees may be assigned to day, evening, night or rotating shifts which may include holidays and weekends.

Personnel In This Classification Will Perform The Following Duties

  • Performs safety, patrol and security duties in motor vehicles or on foot
  • Confronts prowlers and suspicious persons
  • Responds to disturbances and emergencies, renders emergency first aid
  • Prepare detailed reports documenting unusual incidents, meticulously following established agency guidelines to ensure consistency and accuracy
  • Conduct investigations into suspected criminal activities, ensuring to gather evidence and witness statements as needed
  • Make arrests of individuals believed to be involved in these criminal acts and transport them to the appropriate facilities using state-issued vehicles
  • May staff an operations center tasked with overseeing and managing the deployment and coordination of security personnel
  • May testify in court in connection with arrests made while on duty

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet all minimum qualifications and license requirements to be considered, and to appear on the list of people eligible for hire. Please read all requirements before applying.

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: Six months of experience as a certified law enforcement officer.

Notes

  • The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Public Safety Article, Section 3-207, Annotated Code of Maryland.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in Protective Service classifications or Law Enforcement specialty codes in the Military Police Officer field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Desired Or Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

  • Willing to work a flexible shift that requires being on call 24-hours.
  • Experience patrolling, securing, and monitoring premises to ensure authorized personnel access and safety.
  • Employed as a certified law enforcement officer within the last 3 years.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a Police Officer certification as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission at the time of application.
  • Applicants for this classification, formerly certified by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission as a Police Officer within the past three years and are eligible for recertification at the time of appointment, meet the certification requirement for this classification. The recertification criteria are listed in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.07, available at the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to possess or obtain a special police commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.

Special Requirements

  • Selection standards for Police Officer certification are established by theMaryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3-207, Annotated Code of Maryland. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.04 and include the following:

U.S. Citizenship

Must be at least 21 years of age

Satisfactory background investigation, including a check of criminal history

Oral interview

Physical examination

Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland.

  • Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the employer with a phone number where they can be reached.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing inaccordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

  • Personal Leave - new State employees are awarded six (6) personnel days annually (prorated based on start date)
  • Annual Leave - ten (10) days of accumulated annual leave per year
  • Sick Leave - fifteen (15) days of accumulated sick leave per year
  • Parental Leave - up to sixty (60) days of paid parental leave upon the birth or adoption of a child
  • Holidays - State employees also celebrate at least twelve (12) holidays per year
  • Pension - State employees earn credit towards a retirement pension
