Job summary

The Town of Herndon is seeking a Police Officer to protect lives, property and rights by enforcing laws and upholding constitutional protections throughout the community.

You will respond to emergencies and calls for service, conduct patrols, investigate crimes and incidents, and work with residents to build trust and safety.

This is essential work with rigorous training requirements, including academy completion and firearms proficiency, fostering public safety in Herndon.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Certification in firearms proficiency, first aid and other emergency measures mandatory.
• Valid driver's license with acceptable record.
• Must be a United States Citizen.

Responsibilities

• Deters and detects the commission of crimes and enforces laws and ordinances to preserve public peace and maintain safety in the town.
• Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service and citizen complaints as directed and resolves the call or complaint.
• Patrols throughout assigned area, proactively looking for unusual activity or crimes in progress, and provides police visibility to discourage or prevent crime.
• Investigates crimes, accidents and hazardous conditions; interviews witnesses, complainants, victims and suspects.
• Detains, apprehends and arrests suspects and offenders when necessary; follows proper arrest procedures and may exercise reasonable force to maintain physical control over violent or uncooperative offenders.

Job description

Employees in this classification are assigned to patrol operations to perform field duties that include enforcement of laws, response to calls for service and investigation of crime and complaints. Under general direction, this position preserves public peace, protects lives, property and rights, in accordance with applicable laws, ordinances and constitutional protections.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. 1. Deters and detects the commission of crimes and enforces laws and ordinances to preserve public peace and maintain safety in the town.
2. 2. Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service and citizen complaints as directed and resolves the call or complaint.
3. 3. Patrols throughout assigned area, proactively looking for unusual activity or crimes in progress, and provides police visibility to discourage or prevent crime.
4. 4. Investigates crimes, accidents and hazardous conditions; interviews witnesses, complainants, victims and suspects.
5. 5. Detains, apprehends and arrests suspects and offenders when necessary; follows proper arrest procedures and may exercise reasonable force to maintain physical control over violent or uncooperative offenders.
6. 6. Identifies, protects and collects evidence as required, in accordance with procedures.
7. 7. Performs traffic control and enforcement activities to maintain roadway safety; issues summonses and warnings or effects arrests for violations; responds to accidents and collisions and provides scene security and emergency measures.
8. 8. Transports detainees to detention or other required facilities for processing and confinement.
9. 9. Provides quality customer service and ensures professional police interactions and effective working relationships with the community.
10. 10. Engages in public relations and community service activities and events to promote a positive image of the department and town; builds cooperative and collaborative relationships with the community; participates in department and town events as required.
11. 11. Performs other duties as required.

Position is considered “essential personnel”; defined as staff who are required to report to their designated work location during weather-related or other emergencies, even when town offices are closed or normal operations are suspended.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED required
• Supplemented by successful completion of Virginia Law Enforcement Training Academy and subsequent department field training
• Ability to obtain certification in firearms proficiency, first aid and other emergency measures mandatory
• Valid driver’s license with acceptable record
• Must be a United States Citizen
