Job summary

The City of Canton in South Dakota is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Police Officer to perform general police work, respond to calls and emergencies, and investigate violations of laws and ordinances.

Responsibilities include patrols, traffic enforcement, reporting, court testimony, and community engagement. Preferred candidates hold SD certification and/or an associate degree; strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Must have High School Diploma; Associates Degree preferred.
• Must have, or be able to obtain, South Dakota law enforcement certification.
• Previous law enforcement experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct routine patrols and enforce traffic laws.
• Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance.
• Enforce traffic laws and DUI detection; respond to accidents and citizen complaints.
• Locate and arrest violators; issue citations or arrest as needed.
• Prepare detailed arrest and incident reports for the State’s Attorney’s Office.
