JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the enforcement offederal, state, and local laws and the protection of life and property.

MAJOR DUTIES

· Patrols the city to detect and deter criminal activityand traffic violations and to provide assistance as needed; monitors commercialand residential areas for signs of criminal activity.

· Enforces traffic and parking laws through theissuance of citations and warnings; inspects roadways, bridges, and trafficsignals and signs to identify and report hazardous conditions.

· Performs business and residential securitychecks; checks doors, windows, gates, and fences; reports unsecured property.

· Responds to calls for service, includingdomestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missingpersons searches, public service requests, stranded motorists, and others.

· Conducts preliminary investigations into trafficaccidents and other incidents, including interviewing victims, complainants andwitnesses, gathering information and evidence, and securing crime scenes.

· Apprehends, arrests, and processes offenders,including fugitives; subpoenas witnesses.

· Provides assistance and backup support to otherofficers and emergency service providers as necessary.

· Provides traffic direction as needed for eventssuch as parades, funerals, events, and school crossings.

· Testifies in judicial proceedings as necessary.

· Completes all required reports and forms,including accident and incident reports.

· Inspects and maintains assigned patrol car,uniform, and equipment.

· Prepares criminal and search warrants,complaints, and affidavits; serves criminal and court-related paperwork.

· Serves on special teams and task forces asassigned; completes special duty assignments.

· Performs the duties of a School Resource Officeror Community Resource Officer as assigned.

· Attendance is an essential function of thisposition.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

· Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws,criminal and traffic codes, search and seizure laws, town ordinances, and departmentpolicies and procedures.

· Knowledge of traffic accident investigationtechniques and procedures.

· Knowledge of the geography and streets of thecity.

· Knowledge of the court system and judicialprocedures.

· Skill in the use of a computer.

· Skill in operating police vehicles, firearms,and emergency equipment.

· Skill in operating radios and communicationsequipment.

· Skill in operating radar equipment.

· Skill in restraining persons without causingphysical harm.

· Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Police Sergeant assigns work in terms of generalinstructions.Work is reviewed forcompliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and thenature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include state and federal laws, traffic laws, cityordinances, court rulings, constitutional guidelines, training manuals, anddepartment policies and procedures.These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require someinterpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

· The work consists of related law enforcementduties.The varied nature of calls andthe potential for emergencies contribute to the complexity of the work.

· The purpose of this position is to protect lifeand property and enforce federal, state, and local laws.Successful performance contributes to thedetection and deterrence of crime and to the protection of life and property.

CONTACTS

· Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, other emergency service providers, court system personnel, attorneys, judges, medical personnel, law enforcement officers from other agencies, school officials and students, and the general public.

· Contacts are typically to give or exchangeinformation, provide services, interview persons, and resolve problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORKENVIRONMENT

· The work is typically performed in an office andoutdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The work requires the useof specialized law enforcement equipment.The work involves sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, orwalking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools orequipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades ofcolor, and utilizes the sense of smell.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENTRESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS

· Ability to read, write and perform mathematicalcalculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high schoolor equivalent.

· No experience requirements.

· Possession of or ability to readily obtain avalid driver’s license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type ofvehicle or equipment operated.

· Ability to meet current requirements set forthby the South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, & pass the police entry level examinations including a background investigation. Prior experience in law enforcement is desirable. Certified officer preferred.
