Job Description

The Police Officer occupies a staff position assigned to a Police Sergeant. The work involves enforcement of Federal, State, local laws, and campus rules and regulations. Provides service, information, and aid to all as circumstances require, suppresses disturbances, and ensures the security of persons and property. Responsible for enforcement duties for the protection, safety, and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and all property within the areas under the control and jurisdiction of Texas State Technical College, within the limits prescribed by law, Rules and Regulations of the Board of Regents, and institutional rules. Serves as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Statistics Act (Clery Act).

Essential Functions
  1. Demonstrate TSTC Core values of Excellence, Accountability, Service, and Integrity with internal and external stakeholders, customers, students, and community members.
  2. Serve as a community liaison by interacting and collaborating with the community. Work with groups and departments to address specific problems or achieve goals. Assist visitors in locating places and people on campus.
  3. Provide a visible police presence to prevent crimes and promote safety.
  4. Present on topics related to crime prevention, safety, and areas of expertise to the college community.
  5. Investigate crimes, accidents, or complaints on campus; secure and process crime and accident scenes; collect evidence within scope of authority.
  6. Prepare reports, documentation, and relevant information accurately.
  7. Enforce local, State, and Federal laws, including compliance with TSTC Traffic Rules and Regulations.
  8. Make decisions regarding the operation of cases and follow-up work needed.
  9. Observe and note descriptions of persons lingering on campus to prevent crimes.
  10. Patrol campus and controlled areas for fire hazards, traffic violations, safety hazards, and report findings promptly.
  11. Testify in court regarding criminal cases handled on campus.
  12. Assist other governmental agencies as needed or requested.
  13. Maintain integrity, professionalism, and adherence to rules and regulations to preserve public trust.
  14. Maintain departmental vehicle and equipment standards.
  15. Use resources of supervisors for guidance on department policies.
  16. Perform other duties as required of a peace officer.
Education/Experience/Knowledge/Skills
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Current permanent Peace Officers License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
  3. Experience is not required for beginning officers if basic certification is held; experience considered for employment.
  4. Knowledge of safety and security precautions.
  5. Ability to multitask and work cooperatively.
  6. Effective communication skills with all campus segments.
  7. Ability to work under stress and adverse conditions.
  8. Strong interpersonal skills.
  9. Ability to gather and organize legal evidence.
  10. Ability to work with diverse constituencies.
  11. Good judgment and professionalism.
  12. Meet licensing standards per TCOLE.
  13. Ability to work weekends and holidays.
  14. May require out-of-town travel.
  15. Successful completion of a field training program.
  16. Must pass psychological, physical, and background evaluations.
  17. Complete required training within specified timeframes (e.g., Clery Act, First Aid, CPR, Hazards, Threat Assessment, FEMA courses, etc.).
  18. Exertion and physical activity required regularly, including lifting up to 60 lbs, exposure to sensory extremes, and safety risks.
