Job description

This position will serve as a Police Officer at the Oklahoma VA Health Care System in Oklahoma City. The Police Officer will perform a full range of police duties by following and executing rules, regulations, or procedures covering law and rules enforcement, physical and personal security operations, patrol duties, control desk duty, coordination with local courts, and crime prevention activities for the local jurisdiction.

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for the GS-6 position, you must: have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service (or equivalent pay band), which demonstrates knowledge of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques. This experience involves responsibilities such as maintaining order, protecting life and property, taking initial complaints, interviewing witnesses, securing crime scenes, conducting limited searches, responding to emergencies, gathering information, preparing reports, and conducting routine patrols, traffic control, and accident investigations. Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying.

Note: You must provide detailed information about your experience. Vague descriptions like "I was a Patrolman" or "I enforced laws" are insufficient. Your resume must include job titles, duties, start and end dates (month & year), and hours worked per week.

Experience includes paid, unpaid, volunteer work, and service through programs like Peace Corps or AmeriCorps. All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will be credited.

Police Officer Conditions of Employment
  1. Training: New officers must attend an 8-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.
  2. Drug Testing: Applicants selected for testing positions are subject to urinalysis for illegal drug use before employment. Refusal to test results in disqualification.
  3. Medical Examination: Required to ensure fitness for duties involving physical exertion or hazardous activities. Must have good near and distant vision, distinguish basic colors, and hear conversational voice.
  4. Capacity: Must perform essential functions without risk, possess emotional and mental stability, and may require psychological and medical assessments. Conditions that impair ability may be mitigated with accommodations.
  5. Character Investigation: To assess honesty, integrity, character, and loyalty.
  6. Additional Conditions: Must qualify for firearm issuance, maintain licenses, pass physical and psychosocial assessments, and meet legal requirements for firearm possession under the Gun Control Act of 1968.
