DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
This is an entry-level law enforcement position with the City of Dearborn. Please read carefully.
SALARY :
Starting salary is $66,423. Corporal rank is achieved after 4 years with a salary of $86,645.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
- Must pass a post-job-offer physical examination.
- High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
- Meet all employment standards for Michigan Law Enforcement Officers as established by MCOLES, including:
- Valid driver's license.
- Good moral character and no criminal record (including expungements).
- Minimum age 18 years.
- No felony convictions.

- Capable of performing essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation, as determined by a post-job physical exam.
- Willing to maintain residency within a reasonable distance to Dearborn Police Headquarters for timely response during emergencies.

EXAMINATION PROCESS :
The process includes application review, personal history questionnaire, oral interview, psychological evaluation, background check, and chief's interview. Non-certified applicants may be enrolled in a police academy sponsored by the Dearborn Police Department. All candidates must complete a Field Training Program successfully.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Functions :
- Make arrests, using force if necessary.
- Pursue suspects on foot in various terrains and times.
- Subdue resisting subjects using appropriate tactics and nonlethal weapons.
- Perform physical tasks such as climbing, jumping, crawling, and entering confined spaces.
- Use body force and weapons to search, seize, and investigate.
- Operate emergency vehicles safely during various conditions and speeds.
- Conduct searches of persons and premises, including visual and tactile assessments.
- Operate law enforcement equipment and communicate effectively via radio.
- Gather information, prepare reports, and testify in court.
- Perform lifesaving techniques like CPR when needed.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
Marginal Job Functions :
- Assist jail staff and court procedures.
- Serve warrants and subpoenas.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
- Knowledge of police principles, laws, and regulations.
- Ability to learn city streets and layout.
- Ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodations.
- Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with the public.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND LICENSING :
High school diploma or GED required. Must meet all MCOLES standards, including possessing a valid Michigan driver’s license. Candidates with military service or reserve experience with honorable discharge are given special consideration. Must meet Michigan Law Enforcement Training Council standards post-offer.
