Job summary

Ak-Chin Indian Community Police Department seeks a motivated Peace Officer to patrol Ak-Chin lands, enforce tribal/state laws, and respond to incidents. You will assist in investigations, collect evidence, and prepare case reports for prosecution.

Under general supervision, you will train to obtain POST certification within six months, maintain good standing, and complete a comprehensive background check, polygraph, psych eval and medical exam. Arizona driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

  • Must obtain POST certification within six months of hire if not already certified.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older and a U.S. citizen.
  • Must have a valid Arizona Driver's License and meet insurance carrier requirements.
  • Must successfully complete a background check, polygraph, psychological evaluation, and medical exam.
  • Knowledge of Ak-Chin Indian Community laws/ordinances and state/federal statutes.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols assigned Community area, checks businesses/residences, enforces laws and ordinances.
  • Responds to incidents, secures scenes, conducts preliminary investigations.
  • Arrests and transports suspects; processes arrestees per guidelines.
  • Prepares incident reports to support prosecutable cases.
  • Secures/investigates crime scenes and handles evidence properly.
  • Interviews victims, suspects and witnesses to obtain information.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job description

Under general supervision, performs a variety of law enforcement work associated with patrol, traffic enforcement, and investigations. Applicant will be required to attend academy to obtain Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board certification within six (6) months of hire.

Must possess Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (POST) certification as a Peace Officer with no lapse of certified status and be in good standing with current or previous employer; OR be able to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire. Must be 21 years of age, a citizen of the United States, and meet or exceed the physical standards established by the Arizona POST. Must have a valid Arizona Driver's License and be able to meet the Community's insurance carrier requirements. Must be able to successfully complete an extensive background check, including a polygraph test, psychological evaluation and medical exam.

  • Patrols an assigned area of the Community in a radio-equipped vehicle checking businesses/residences, discovering/preventing criminal activities, and enforcing State/Community laws/ordinances.
  • Responds to calls involving automobile accidents, assaults, domestic disturbances, and other criminal activities/civil complaints to secure the scene, conduct preliminary investigations, and establish law and order.
  • Arrests, questions, and transports suspects and/or persons with outstanding arrest warrants to jail facilities.
  • Ensures that arrested persons are processed (booked) into jail in accordance with State and Federal guidelines and Police Department and jail procedures.
  • Prepares incident reports regarding all activities to facilitate preparation of prosecutable cases.
  • Secures/investigates crime scenes to ensure that the collection, preservation, and handling of physical evidence and property meets established professional and legal standards.
  • Gathers and records/preserves information and evidence. Interviews/interrogates victims, suspects, and witnesses to obtain and verify information pertinent to the investigation and resolution of a variety of criminal/potentially criminal incidents.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of Ak-Chin Indian Community laws/ordinances to be enforced.
  • Knowledge of State, Federal, and County statutes, codes, and ordinances to be enforced.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles and practices, including investigation, identification, patrol, traffic control, community/public relations, records management, report preparation, and custody of persons and property.
  • Knowledge of the equipment used in law enforcement, including weaponry, communications, and automotive equipment.
  • Knowledge of the location of streets and addresses in Ak-Chin and the surrounding area.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other law enforcement agency and regulatory agency/organization staff, Community officials, criminal justice staff, and the public.
  • Skill in understanding and interpreting complex statutes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
  • Skill in preparing reports documenting the facts and actions regarding criminal/civil incidents.
  • Skill in using a variety of specialized law enforcement equipment.
  • Skill in operating a motor vehicle.
  • Skill in communicating using a standard two-way radio.
  • Skill in conducting investigations of criminal activities.
