Job Summary

Reporting to the sergeant, the employee receives detailed instructions and broad guidelines on the performance of his/her duties and responsibilities. Independence in judgments and methods of operations will be expected, ensuring that all actions conform to the parameters of Department policy. The incumbent may rotate among day, evening and night tours of duty and may be required to rotate among various assignments at the discretion of the Field Operations Lieutenant or the Chief of Police. Employee may be required to work overtime. Provides community leadership in establishing a secure and peaceful environment that contributes to a meaningful learning atmosphere; to provide direct support to the Watch Commander or Unit Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Employee handles criminal and non-criminal cases; problems of safety; and public service situations. Investigates criminal occurrences. Makes arrests and transports prisoners. Employee contacts all witnesses involved in cases and may remind them of trial and court dates, to include assisting them in preparing for testimony. Employee will have instances where personal court appearance is necessary. Employee handles motor vehicle collisions and provides safety escorts for persons and/or money. Employee is responsible for building perimeter lock and unlock. Responds to fire and security alarms. Employee utilizes evacuation procedures for faculty, staff, students and visitors as emergency situations require.
  • Writes reports which accurately describe events as they occur or as they are described to the employee. Includes detailed accident diagrams or crime scenes as needed. Reviews reports for accuracy. Requires knowledge of computer operations. The officer verbally communicates information in person, by two-way radio or by telephone; includes testifying in court, relaying information to supervisors, fellow officers and other agencies.
  • Participates in training which includes classroom instruction and on-the-job training. Employee must successfully demonstrate proficiency in the use of firearms and participates in defensive tactics and physical fitness training. Minimum, acceptable firearms scores must be maintained as a condition of employment. Employee must meet all training requirements established by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training and Department policy. Employee is issued Department equipment necessary to perform duties and is expected to keep that equipment in clean, working order.

Knowledge of law enforcement methods, traffic control and arrest & safety procedures.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Physical Summary

  • Heavy work - Job involves lifting more than 40 pounds. Approximately half of the incumbent's time will be spent walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, or climbing

Licenses / Certificates

  • Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California
  • Must meet employment requirements established by P.O.S.T and state law
  • Must Possess Basic P.O.S.T Certificate
  • Valid California Driver’s License required.

Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $8,069 - $9,047 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,576 - $9,468 per month.

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Additional Information

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSULB will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Due to the nature of this position, current CSULB employees are subject to a criminal record check unless they have successfully completed a criminal background check through CSULB within the past 12 months.
