Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Patrols assigned areas in a police vehicle, bicycle, or on foot to prevent and detect crimes, maintain public safety, and enforce laws.
  • Maintains contact with community leaders, citizens, and children to address public safety concerns and build positive relationships.
  • Responds to calls for service, complaints, and emergencies, including crimes in progress, accidents, and public disturbances.
  • Investigates crimes, accidents, and suspicious conditions; gathers evidence, interviews witnesses, and prepares reports.
  • Apprehends, subdues, and restrains suspects when necessary; makes arrests for violations of laws or ordinances.
  • Escorts prisoners to detention facilities; books prisoners and prepares arrest and incident records.
  • Enforces traffic laws and parking regulations, issues citations, directs traffic, and investigates vehicle crashes.
  • Provides assistance to stranded motorists, crime victims, and others in need of help.
  • Attends training courses, meetings, and professional development sessions to maintain skills and certifications.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of police work to protect life, property, and the rights of citizens, and to enforce local, state, and federal laws. Promotes public safety, fostering positive police/community relationships, and encourages community involvement in crime prevention and reduction. Reports to a Sergeant.

Minimum Qualifications:

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

Work is performed in various environments, including indoor office settings, outdoor areas, and high-risk situations. Subject to extended periods of walking, running, standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds. Involves exposure to dangerous situations, emotionally charged incidents, and varying weather conditions. Must maintain physical ability to defend oneself and restrain suspects of varying sizes.

Requirements

This examination will be administered in accordance with Chapter 143 of the Texas Local Government Code and City of Greenville Local Civil Service Rules and Regulations. The eligibility list created from this examination shall be used to fill any Police Officer vacancy that occurs within six (6) months following certification of that list, or until exhausted.

General eligibility requirements to take the written examination:

Citizenship/Language:

Must be a citizen of the United States by birth, naturalization or permanent resident and shall be able to read, write, and fluently speak English.

Age:

A person may not take an entrance examination for a beginning position in the Police Department unless the person is at least 21 years of age.

Requirements:

Applicants shall, by the time of hire:

  • Have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
Required Documents:

You must bring the following documents to the testing site on the day of the exam:

  • Driver’s License
  • DD-214 for military points (Honorable discharge only; Five (5) points added to the raw score.)
    • If DD-214 is not presented at the testing site, military points will not be awarded.
  • Completed Personal History Statement

Applicants must pass the written exam with a minimum score of 70 percent (70%). Physical ability (PA) testing follows IMMEDIATELY for successful applicants. Bring appropriate workout clothes and shoes. After successful completion of the examination and PA testing, an eligibility list will be established and will remain in effect for six (6) months, or until exhausted.
