WORK OBJECTIVE:

Under the direction of the Chief of Police, Patrols NFTA/METRO facilities and properties to prevent crime and protect life and property. Promotes good public relations and assists the public as needed. Preforms Police functions as directed and required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Performs directed patrol assignments and responds to routine calls for service; directs vehicle and pedestrian traffic; responds to burglar and intrusion alarms; checks buildings for signs of unlawful entry; performs crowd control; makes emergency notifications.
• Enforces motor vehicle laws.
• Investigates vehicle accidents; sketches and photographs accident scenes; secures and processes evidence; interviews participants and witnesses; performs traffic direction and control; determines fault and contributing factors; completes reports and required paperwork.
• Enforces criminal laws and NFTA ordinances.
• Searches persons and crime scenes; packages, transports and submits evidence; protects integrity of crime scenes.
• Recovers and inventories stolen property.
• Apprehends and arrests violent and non-violent misdemeanor and felony suspects; advises persons of constitutional rights; conducts field searches of arrested persons; handcuffs, fingerprints, photographs and books prisoners; explains arrest or nature of complaint to offenders; inventories prisoner's belongings; transports prisoners.
• Completes arrest report narratives, written narratives on incidents and offenses and citation forms; takes field notes and written statements from witnesses.
• Discusses cases with prosecutor; testifies and presents physical evidence in court.
• Assists in ensuring personal safety and welfare of persons suffering from mental and/or emotional illness or instability; provides access to appropriate care or evaluation.
• Speaks to children and community groups on safety and law enforcement topics; provides tours of the Police Department.
• Attends and successfully completes all required training sessions.
• Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other officers, NFTA employees, officials, government agencies, and the general public; knowledge of the geography of the jurisdiction; considerable knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; ability to analyze situations and act quickly and efficiently; basic knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures with the ability to apply knowledge or proper procedures to specific situation; basic knowledge of proper procedures regarding the collection of evidence; basic knowledge of how to use departmental equipment including the safe care and use of firearms, radar, breathalyzer, pepper spray and crime investigation kits; intermediate knowledge of first-aid; ability to operate a motor vehicle at high speed, inclement weather and other dangerous situations; ability to communicate effectively to include the accurate preparation of reports. Must be able to work rotating shifts to include weekends, holidays, overtime and call-ins.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates are required to meet the medical and physical fitness standards set forth in 9 NYCRR Part 600, including, but not limited to, the following requirements:Must be physically fit to perform police duties, as determined by medical examination and agility tests. Must have visual acuity, near and far, of at least 20/30 in each eye without corrective lenses or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/30 or better with corrective lenses and binocular acuity of at least 20/30 in both eyes with or without corrective lenses. Visual and binocular acuity must be at least 20/100 without corrective lenses. Field of vision must be at least 70° in the horizontal median in each eye. Must demonstrate normal stereo depth perception to the correctable standard of 80 ARC seconds. Candidate must correctly read nine (9) of the first thirteen (14) plates of the 24-plate edition of the Ishihara Color Vision Test. Resting blood pressure must be less than or equal to 140/90. Hearing levels must not exceed 25 decibels (DB) at either 500, 1000, or 2000 Hertz (Hz), nor exceed 30 DB at 3000 Hz frequencies in each ear.As a prerequisite for appointment, applicants will be required to pass a thorough medical and psychological examination to be administered by the appointing authority. ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Some tasks are performed with potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements including, but not limited to, heat, humidity, inclement weather, loud noise, and weapons. Tasks include working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, carts, and materials handling, where heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property. Standard body gear and equipment applies in the preservation of life and property, as does safety equipment based on the nature of the work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent; or an Honorable Discharge from the United States military following at least 2 years active military service, 6 years Reserves or US National Guard service; or successful completion of a Certified Police Officer Training Course approved by, or equivalent to a course approved by the NYS Municipal Police Training Council. NYS Peace Officer certification does not qualify for this exception. Must possess and maintain valid New York State driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record. At time of appointment, candidate must reside in any surrounding county that touches Erie, Niagara, or Genesee counties. Basic computer skills preferred, including the ability to use MS Word and Excel to prepare reports and complete routine tasks. Must be at least 20 years old at the time of the examination; must be 21 years of age at time of appointment. US Citizenship required. To be eligible for appointment to this position, candidates will be required to complete the following: criminal background check, drug/alcohol screening, interview(s), medical examination, written exam, physical agility test, and psychological examination.
