This position requires successful completion of a written examination, oral interviews, pass an extensive background investigation in compliance with the requirements mandated by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training and current law, as well as a potential polygraph or similar examination, and a psychological examination, and medical exams which include a physical agility test and drug screening.

Reporting to and under the direction of the Chief of Police, the Police Lieutenant (lieutenant) manages, plans, directs activities, provides oversight and supervision for patrol, investigations, crime prevention, community engagement, special events, administrative investigations, records management, policy, and training for the Sonoma State Police Department. The lieutenant effectively communicates with sworn and non-sworn Police personnel, provides oversight and guidance, and mentors personnel to achieve desired goals and further develop within their positions or assignments. This includes, but is not limited to, guiding, planning, organizing, monitoring, recommending, and implementing policies and administrative procedures related to law enforcement services to achieve goals in accordance with current applicable Federal, State, local laws, and CSU policies and procedures. The incumbent also assists with developing and implementing a wide variety of law enforcement functions, programs, projects, and related activities, as well as organizing special event planning activities, attending meetings in the chief’s absence, and aiding in other areas when needed. Notwithstanding other provisions, this position works collaboratively with other University and outside agencies on matters related to mental health, task forces, special investigations, dignitary protection, threat assessment and serves as a field manager for incidents, demonstrations and/or special events. The Police Lieutenant assumes responsibility of the Sonoma State Police Department in the absence of the Chief of Police and/or when the Chief of Police is unavailable.

Starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $5,053 to $11,250 approved a month. This position is a member of the Management Personnel Plan and serves at the pleasure of the President.
