The Police Lieutenant is a command-level supervisor responsible for leading personnel, managing operations, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and applicable laws, and delivering professional, ethical, and community-oriented police services. The Police Lieutenant has regular contact with the public and is responsible for providing emergency and non-emergency police services. Duties may vary depending on the assigned division or area of responsibility. In a supervisory capacity, the Lieutenant provides leadership, interprets and applies departmental written directives, supervises sworn and civilian personnel, and performs assigned management functions. The Lieutenant assists the assigned division with audits, staff studies, statistical analysis, planning, budgeting, personnel matters, and operational initiatives. This position requires mature judgment, sound decision-making, professionalism, and adherence to legal and ethical standards while supporting the quality of life and public safety needs of the City of Red Oak.
Supervises, directs, evaluates, coaches, and mentors sworn officers, civilian employees, and supervisors. Assigns work, evaluates performance, resolves employee concerns, recommends hiring and promotional actions, administers discipline, approves leave, and ensures compliance with departmental policies and applicable laws.

Work may require rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, extended hours, emergency call-outs, court attendance, and response to critical incidents. The Lieutenant is expected to respond professionally and make sound decisions in routine and emergency situations.
