  • Performs CCIC/NCIC queries and uses related police databases.
  • Collaborates with other law enforcement agencies as needed.
  • Supports sworn personnel in execution of search warrants and evidence collection.

Job description

HIRING RANGE: $32.36 - $35.96/hour

The work schedule for this position will be primarily in-person with limited remote work opportunity after successful completion of the probationary period. Remote work opportunities are subject to change based on business needs.

The Investigative Technicians serves in a non-sworn capacity as administrative and technical support to an assigned division within the Police Department and aids with investigations, preparation of case filings, and evidentiary exhibits. The Investigative Technicians are responsible for maintaining working knowledge of police informational databases, audio and visual recording systems, computer software, crime scene evidence collection, evidence preservation, and courtroom display for the purpose of enhancing investigations while alleviating detective workload.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Takes initial reports by interviewing victims, witnesses, by obtaining the facts concerning the case and conducts some follow-up investigations.
  • Assists with construction of case files for presentation to the District Attorney’s Office (DA).
  • Duplicates various electronic media for distribution to the DA’s Office for filing and discovery purposes. This includes copies of reports, interviews, copies of photographs, and copies of photographic contact sheets.
  • Processes, seizes, and books physical evidence in accordance with department policies and procedures and rules of criminal evidence.
  • Reviews files and completes necessary supplemental reports on cases.
  • Receives subpoenas to testify in court and may be required to do so regarding case investigations.
  • Conducts computer work to include query and entry on the CCIC System, criminal histories, warrants, report writing, evidence and case management systems, DMV query and request for photographs, and send teletypes to other jurisdictions in state and out of state requesting information.
  • Contacts other law enforcement agencies to collaborate or provide information.
  • Supports sworn personnel in the execution of search warrants, photographing and documenting evidence collection on scene.
  • Other duties as assigned, specific to the unit of assignment.

  • Lifting and Carrying The ability to lift/move objects such as files and boxes weighing up to 30 pounds from one location to another.
  • Body positions Work is performed in an office environment, with some moving about within the Police Department and other outlying locations. Extended periods of sitting, as well as reaching, stretching, bending, and stooping. Position requires the ability to input large amounts of data using repetitive motion on a consistent daily basis.

  • Hearing sufficient to converse over the telephone and in person, to hear audible signals from computer and office equipment and surrounding environment.
Vision
  • Vision Employee uses vision to enter data into computer, read handwriting and various reports and documents.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Mathematics Employee uses basic adding, subtraction, multiplication and division to figure data for cases and maintain statistics relative to pawn shops.
  • Remembering Must have the ability to remember and use policies, procedures and regulations pertinent to the position and to remember and follow instructions given by supervisor.
  • Language Ability Must be able to read, interpret and comprehend various documents and be able to speak the English language in order to communicate with citizens, co-workers, pawn shop business personnel and others.
  • Reasoning Must have the ability to apply common sense, understanding and good judgment in making decisions relevant to the position and manage multiple tasks.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work involves extensive telephone contact, as well as in-person contact with pawn shop business owners/workers, citizens, and co-workers. Work involves large caseloads, frequent contact with irate or upset crime victims or witnesses the level of responsibility, and the consequence for error. Work is performed largely in an office environment with regular visits to pawn shops in the metro area. All Lakewood employees are expected to work and complete all tasks in a safe manner consistent with training, standard operating procedures, City or Department policies, and common sense.
  • Working in a safe manner includes the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and complying with all City and/or Department safety rules. Horseplay on-the-job is strictly forbidden. The failure to work in a safe manner, use PPE, follow standard operating procedure or comply with a safety rule will result adverse employment consequences ranging from verbal discipline to termination from employment, including any applicable reduction in benefits under the Colorado Workers’ Compensation Act.
  • Employees are also expected to encourage safe work practices by all co-employees, and to report any unsafe work practices immediately to a supervisor.
