Job description

The University of Miami has a great opportunity for a Dispatcher to work at the Coral Gables Campus.

The Police Dispatcher serves as the initial point of contact for those in need of emergency and non-emergency services on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus. Responsibilities include:

  1. Receiving and categorizing calls for assistance.
  2. Dispatching emergency and non-emergency law enforcement services.
  3. Coordinating emergency medical and fire services with local agencies.
  4. Activating emergency messaging.
  5. Monitoring building and fire alarm systems, dispatching responders when necessary.
  6. Monitoring security camera systems to identify suspicious activity.
  7. Answering general questions from the public about the University.
  8. Providing critical support to the law enforcement mission of the University of Miami Police Department.

The Police Dispatcher performs work at demanding levels that includes performing multiple tasks under emergency conditions where speed and accuracy are significant factors. Strong communication skills are essential including accuracy and speed while typing; clear enunciation over phone and radio systems; conversation de-escalation; and customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Communicates with phone and walk-in callers to collect critical information regarding incident type, location, timeline, etc.
  2. Properly categorizes and prioritizes incoming calls for service based on the provided information.
  3. Manages available field resources and dispatches the proper quantity and class of unit to a call for service.
  4. Provides timely, succinct, and accurate information to responding units via two-way radio communication systems.
  5. Operates telecommunications systems to dispatch law enforcement, security guards, firefighting services, emergency medical services, and their equipment.
  6. Coordinates mutual aid unit response from local agencies.
  7. Effectively handles aggravated callers, crisis calls, and negotiates with suicidal callers.
  8. Conducts immediate records checks of private databases.
  9. Receives and screens routine calls for assistance or information from the public.
  10. Continuously updates law enforcement Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) software.
  11. Operates all communication systems and equipment.
  12. Activates the Emergency Notification Network mass notification system.
  13. Monitors virtual safety escort software for distress signals.
  14. Registers micro-mobility vehicles such as bicycles and scooters.
  15. Assists with training and explaining operational processes for new employees.
  16. Maintains and updates computerized and written records.
  17. Preserves strict confidentiality of protected information.
  18. Performs front desk receptionist duties.
  19. Provides transfer briefings to oncoming personnel.
  20. Performs other related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of emergency communication systems and equipment.
  2. Knowledge of police, fire, and medical first responder common practices.
  3. Skilled in managing multiple tasks at once during stressful situations.
  4. Types 40 words per minute or faster.
  5. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  6. Ability to work under a high stress environment.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public. Must be able to work different shifts as required. May occasionally be required to lift, carry and/or push items weighing up to 20 lbs.
