Position Summary
Primarily responsible for operating 2-way radio system for Police and Fire Departments in order to dispatch police and fire personnel and equipment to meet emergency requirements and related duties
Major Accountabilities
- Answer 911 emergency and all non-emergency telephone calls
- Forward messages in a timely manner to the proper officers or other employees
- Check and reply to e-mail messages as related to work duties in a timely manner
- Operates 2-way radio for emergency calls for crimes in progress, accidents, citizen complaints, fire and EMS calls; additionally, complaints of flooding, storm damage, broken utility lines and notify appropriate departments or resources for investigation and repair
- Operates computer terminal for LEADS (Law Enforcement Automated Data System), NCIC (National Crime Information Center), ALEC (Automated Law Enforcement Communications Systems), NLETS (National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System), CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch)
- Advise field personnel of emergency incidences, disturbances, etc. within their vicinity
- Give assistance to citizens at the dispatch window for tow release fees, permits, capias fees, and repossession cards
- Obtain information and make minor non-investigatory reports as needed
- Prepare warrants, and reports as necessary & maintain record of computer activity
- Prepare, record and maintain computerized record of stolen property
- Secondarily responsible for oversight of prisoners as may be needed, including arrangements for food, care and jail inspection
- Female Dispatchers/ assist with matron duties for female prisoners such as pat downs and searches as per policy and procedures
- Assist with prisoner visits and transports as needed
- Responsible for reporting unsafe conditions and responsible for keeping the dispatch area neat and clean
Necessary Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Must have good oral communication skills; ability to think and act promptly in emergency situations and offer an effective course of action. Must have capability to follow and carry out written and verbal instruction. Good computer skills. Strive to maintain an effective working relationship with associates and general public. Dispatcher must have high school diploma or certificate of high school equivalency (GED).

- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrate ability to successfully handle conflict resolution at all levels with a variety of people, including external customers;
- Ability to pay close attention to detail and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to communicate the written and spoken word with tact, diplomacy, and/or authority when necessary
- Well disciplined, able to meet deadlines, self-starter, team builder
- Able to work under pressure of many priorities and deadlines
- Ability to work well as a part of a team
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to perform the following; Sit for long periods of time
- Operate office equipment to include but not limited to, computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, fax machine and other office equipment.
