Job summary

The City of Stockbridge seeks an experienced Police Detective to join the Stockbridge Police Department. You will conduct complex criminal investigations, gather and analyze evidence, interview witnesses and suspects, and support prosecution of cases.

Candidates should have extensive investigative experience involving crimes against persons, including homicide, robbery, aggravated assault, domestic violence, or related fields.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in political science, criminology, criminal justice, or related field; bachelor’s preferred.
  • 4–6 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including 2 years as an investigator.
  • Equivalent education, training or experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates crimes in progress and recently discovered incidents.
  • Identifies witnesses and suspects; conducts interviews and records statements.
  • Maintains control over physical evidence.
  • Determines probable cause, obtains warrants, and conducts searches/arrests.

The City of Stockbridge is seeking an experienced law enforcement professional to join the Stockbridge Police Department as a Police Detective. This position offers the opportunity to conduct complex criminal investigations, gather and analyze evidence, interview witnesses and suspects, and support the successful prosecution of criminal cases. Candidates should have extensive investigative experience involving crimes against persons, including Homicide, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Crimes Against Women & Children, Domestic Violence, or related fields.

Major Duties
  • Investigates reports of crimes in progress, reports of recently discovered crimes, and incident reports prepared by police officers.
  • Identifies possible witnesses and suspects through independent investigation or reports of other officers or witnesses; conducts interviews to gather information regarding criminal incidents and records statements made.
  • Maintains control over physical evidence gathered.
  • Determines probable cause to search, obtains search warrant from appropriate courts, and personally conducts searches authorized; describes reason for arrest and obtains arrest warrants from appropriate court, and either personally makes arrest or turns warrant over to uniform patrol division or other law enforcement agency for service.
  • Gathers all information related to a case; determines, either personally or with assistance of supervisor, when case is complete and submits information assembled to court system for prosecution; assists court system with additional investigation as required; appears as a witness in local, state, and federal courts to provide testimony regarding cases investigated.
  • Reviews incident reports and arrest records to determine patterns of criminal activity.

  • Ability to analyze complex ideas or activities into smaller parts; simultaneously consider numerous facts, perceive patters and relationships, develop theories about past occurrences based on numerous small bits of information or evidence, compare and interpret information, recognize and examine discrepancies, and draw logical conclusions.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously.
  • Ability to develop pertinent questions for interviews, perceive when the person being interviewed has not understood, rephrase/clarify questions, follow-up on unanswered questions or conflicting statements and keep the interview focused on the material to be covered.
  • Knowledge of modern police procedures, methods, techniques, and practices in patrol, crime prevention, investigation, and administration.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of search and seizure and preservation and presentation of evidence.
Requirements
Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in Political Science, Criminology, Criminal Justice, or related field desired; Bachelor’s degree preferred; four (4) to six (6) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience to include two (2) years as an investigator; Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities for the job may be considered in lieu of educational requirement.

Special Qualifications

Certified Peace Officer under regulations of Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.); valid Georgia Driver’s License; successfully pass pre-employment physical abilities test, medical and drug screen; satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR); and acceptable background investigation.
