Job description

SUMMARY

This is a non-sworn position within the police department that performs a variety of duties that do not require police authority and are generally associated with tasks pertaining to the care and custody of individuals detained for initial appears within the Maryland District Court System. This position is an entrance level position which must be served before eligibility for a position as a police custody officer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following:

  • Assists in the processing and court appearances of prisoners; to include fingerprinting, property retention and R.M.S./J.M.S. data entry
  • Provides assistance to citizens who seek police service or information
  • Answers emergency and non-emergency telephone calls and directs calls to the appropriate extension
  • Performs miscellaneous maintenance work on the Public Safety Building, police equipment and police vehicles.
  • Delivers and picks-up parcels and packages.
  • Serves as a witness in court as needed
  • Assures security protocols are maintained and followed at the Public Safety Building.
  • Has a basic knowledge of municipal codes as outlined by the Town of Ocean City ordinances and can provide enforcement measures as necessary.
  • Applies Departmental policies, practices and procedures specific to the job task.
  • Interacts effectively with citizens and co-workers.
  • Applies approved first aid standards
  • Performs other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a non-supervisory position

QUALIFICATIONS -To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

OTHER ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Eighteen years of age at the time of appointment
  • United States citizen
  • Visual acuity must be correctable to 20/20 with the ability to recognize basic colors.
  • Must maintain a level of physical fitness and readiness to successfully complete physical training, to include defensive tactics and physical fitness programs, as established by departmental policy.
  • Must meet employment standards set by the Town of Ocean City and the Department to include medical examination, drug screen, truth verification examination and psychological screening, if deemed necessary.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:Must have a valid driver’s license.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Must maintain a weight that is healthy and can ensure physical agility without problems as pre-determined by set physical fitness standards.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, internal memorandums, and simple training procedures. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, command staff and management, officers of the court, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.

REASONING ABILITY:Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
