Job summary

The City of Hudson is seeking an experienced Police Chief to lead the department, work closely with officers and residents, and build partnerships with the City Manager, schools, and neighboring agencies.

Reporting to the City Manager, the Chief will oversee operations, personnel, policies, training, budget, and delivery of professional police services with a focus on public trust and accountability.

Qualifications

• Progressive law enforcement experience with supervisory or command responsibilities.
• Current Michigan law enforcement licensure through MCOLES, or ability to obtain prior to sworn duties.
• Thorough knowledge of police operations, supervision, investigations, budgeting, policy development, and constitutional policing.
• Strong written communication, conflict resolution, decision-making, and community engagement skills.
• Valid driver's license and ability to meet employment and licensing standards.
• Equivalents in education, training, and experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

• Lead, supervise, coach, and evaluate full-time and part-time personnel; plan staffing and coverage.
• Direct patrol, investigations, traffic safety, emergency response, and coordination with school resource officer program.
• Maintain policies, training, records, evidence practices, and compliance with laws and standards.
• Prepare and manage the department budget; recommend equipment, technology, and improvements.
• Collaborate with City Manager and departments; communicate with residents and present matters to City Council.
• Build relationships with Lenawee County dispatch, prosecutors, schools, and public safety partners.
• Respond to significant incidents and be available for urgent matters outside regular hours.

The successful candidate will combine sound field judgment with steady leadership, accountability, and a commitment to public trust.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead, supervise, coach, and evaluate full-time and part-time personnel; plan staffing and coverage for reliable service.
• Direct patrol, investigations, traffic safety, emergency response, and coordination with the school resource officer program.
• Maintain current policies, training, records, evidence practices, and compliance with applicable laws and Michigan law enforcement standards.

• Work closely with the City Manager and other City departments; communicate clearly with residents and present department matters to City Council as needed.
• Build effective relationships with Lenawee County dispatch, prosecutors, schools, and local, county, and state public safety partners.
• Respond to significant incidents and be available for urgent matters outside regular hours.

• Progressive law enforcement experience, including demonstrated supervisory or command responsibility.
• Current Michigan law enforcement licensure through MCOLES, or the ability to obtain Michigan licensure before performing sworn duties.
• Thorough knowledge of police operations, personnel supervision, investigations, budgeting, policy development, and constitutional policing.
• Strong written communication, conflict resolution, decision-making, and community engagement skills.
• Valid driver's license and ability to meet all applicable employment and licensing standards.
