The City of Angleton Police Department is excited to announce the launch of its Police Cadet Sponsorship Program, providing qualified candidates with an opportunity to pursue a career in law enforcement while gaining valuable experience and training.

The Cadet Program is governed by the requirements and guidelines established in the Cadet Sponsorship Program.

Minimum Testing Requirements for Cadet Selection Include

Candidates must successfully complete a Physical Agility Test, consisting of the following:

• 1.5-Mile Run: Complete within 17 minutes and 15 seconds
• Push-Ups: Complete 25 repetitions within 60 seconds
• Sit-Ups: Complete 30 repetitions within 60 seconds

Candidates must also successfully complete a Vocabulary and Literacy Test as part of the selection process.

The Angleton Police Department is seeking motivated, disciplined, and community-minded individuals for the position of Police Cadet.

The Police Cadet position is designed for individuals pursuing a career as a Texas peace officer who are not yet licensed. The primary responsibility of the Police Cadet is to successfully attend, participate in, and graduate from a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)-approved Basic Peace Officer Academy.

This is more than an entry-level position—it is the first step toward becoming a Police Officer with the Angleton Police Department.

Selected candidates will be expected to demonstrate the dedication, professionalism, academic performance, physical fitness, discipline, and personal conduct necessary to successfully complete a police academy and meet the standards required for a future career in law enforcement.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Angleton Police Department, the Police Cadet will be assigned to attend a TCOLE-approved Basic Peace Officer Academy chosen by the City of Angleton Police Chief.

The Police Cadet’s primary objective is to successfully complete all academy requirements and obtain a Texas Peace Officer License through TCOLE.

The Cadet will be expected to:

• Attend all required academy classes and training.
• Maintain satisfactory academic performance.
• Successfully complete all required written examinations.
• Successfully complete required physical training and skills testing.
• Successfully complete firearms training and qualification requirements.
• Successfully complete defensive tactics training.
• Successfully complete driving and emergency vehicle operations training.
• Successfully complete practical skills examinations.
• Maintain satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
• Follow all academy rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Follow all lawful instructions from academy instructors and the Angleton Police Department personnel.
• Maintain the professional standards expected of a future Angleton Police Officer.
• Successfully graduate from the academy.
• Successfully obtain the required TCOLE peace officer license.
• Upon successful completion of the academy and licensing requirements, successfully complete the Angleton Police Department’s required field training and evaluation process.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Police Cadet's primary responsibility is to successfully complete the police academy.

Such responsibilities include:

Academy Attendance

• Report to the academy on time and be prepared for training.
• Maintain excellent attendance and punctuality.
• Participate fully in all classroom, physical, practical, and skills-based training.
• Complete all assigned homework, study requirements, and examinations.
• Notify appropriate department personnel of any issue that may affect academy attendance or performance.

Academic Performance

• Maintain the academic standards established by the academy and TCOLE.
• Demonstrate the ability to learn and apply Texas law and law-enforcement concepts.
• Successfully complete required examinations and assessments.
• Demonstrate proficiency in subjects including, but not limited to:

Physical & Practical Training

The Cadet must maintain the physical conditioning necessary to participate successfully in academy training and must complete required practical skills.

• Scenario-based training
• First aid and emergency response
• Other TCOLE-required proficiency areas

Professional Conduct

As a future representative of the Angleton Police Department, the Cadet shall maintain the highest standards of professional conduct.

Cadets are expected to:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet the minimum requirements established by the Angleton Police Department and applicable TCOLE requirements for enrollment in a Basic Peace Officer Academy.

Applicants must:

• Be at least 21 years of age or meet all applicable requirements for academy enrollment.
• Possess a high school diploma or GED.
• Possess a valid driver’s license or be eligible to obtain one.
• Be legally authorized to work in the United States; sponsorship is not available.
• Meet applicable TCOLE eligibility requirements.
• Successfully complete the Angleton Police Department hiring and selection process.
• Successfully pass all required background investigations and screening processes.
• Meet the physical and mental requirements established by the department and applicable academy.
• Demonstrate good moral character, integrity, and judgment.

Note: Final eligibility for enrollment in a TCOLE-approved Basic Peace Officer Academy is subject to applicable TCOLE requirements and academy admission standards.

Successful completion of the academy does not automatically guarantee appointment as a Peace Officer. Candidates must continue to meet all departmental requirements and successfully complete the applicable hiring, licensing, and field-training requirements.

Compensation

Compensation for a cadet will be $20.00 per hour.

Additional compensation and benefits are available upon becoming an officer in training with the City of Angleton Police Department and in accordance with City of Angleton policies.

SERVICE AGREEMENT

Because the City invests significant resources in each cadet, participants must agree to remain employed with the Angleton Police Department for 36 months following the successful completion of Field Training.

If employment is voluntarily terminated before completion of the agreement, reimbursement will be required in full for academy tuition, uniforms, and equipment, consistent with Texas law and City policy.

Field Training The vital transition phase where academy graduates apply classroom knowledge to real-world policing under the direct supervision of a veteran Field Training Officer (FTO).

Successful Completion The cadet/employee has met the established requirements, expectations, and measurable outcomes for the assignment, training, probationary period, or other defined process by:

• Completing all required tasks, training, or assignments by the established deadline.
• Demonstrating the required knowledge, skills, or competencies.
• Meeting defined performance and quality standards.
• Correcting identified performance or conduct deficiencies when applicable.
• Maintaining the required level of performance for a specified period.
• Receiving verification from the appropriate staff that requirements were satisfied.

Voluntarily Terminated An employee chooses to leave a job or end a contract of their own free will, such as through a resignation or retirement.
