Job summary

The City of Southfield is seeking Police Cadets (Non-Career) for the Southfield Police Department. The position offers hands-on training, sponsorship to the Police Academy, a ride-along experience, and all equipment provided.

Eligibility includes U.S. citizenship, minimum 18, a high school diploma or GED, and meeting MCOLES Employment Standards. A valid Michigan driver’s license with a good driving record is required, and no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.

Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D).
  • Must be able to meet the MCOLES Employment Standards.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation, including operation of motor vehicles and other equipment.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Must have no felony convictions and no record of serious misdemeanor convictions.
  • Prefer Police Cadets to pursue an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement or related field.

Responsibilities

  • The Southfield Police Cadet Program is used as an applicant pool for hiring entry-level probationary Police Officers.
  • Participation in the Cadet Program does not guarantee employment in a full-time Police Officer position with the City of Southfield.
  • Cadets will be considered “At-Will” members and continued participation is at the sole discretion of the City of Southfield.
  • Selection steps include application review, driving record and criminal history check, a written examination, and an oral board interview.
  • Selected candidates will undergo a background investigation and must pass a psychological evaluation and physical exam.

CLASSIFICATION: Police Cadet (Non-Career) - Southfield Police Department
SALARY: $20.00 per hour
HOURS: 7am-3pm (40 hours per week)

The selection process will include the completion of a City of Southfield application, a review of the applicant's qualifications, driving record and criminal history check, a written examination, and an oral board interview. Selected candidates will be subject to an extensive level 4 background investigation, and must successfully pass a psychological evaluation and physical exam prior to employment. Each step of the process must be passed before the applicant will be moved to the next step.

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will be notified by email to attend an orientation and testing. Applicants must maintain all minimum requirements and certifications while waiting for consideration for employment.
