Job summary

The City of Cotati is seeking a Police Officer Trainee to participate in a state-approved Basic Police Academy and complete the course to obtain California peace officer status. This is a non-sworn, entry-level role with no police powers while learning and observing sworn officers and civilian staff.

The trainee will undergo about five months of training, study Penal and Vehicle Codes, and learn basic investigations, ethics, and report writing.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to a high school diploma; relevant work or volunteer experience is qualifying.
• Some college coursework is highly desirable.
• Must obtain a POST basic certificate within one year of appointment.

Responsibilities

• Attend and participate in a Basic Police Academy for about five months.
• Receive instruction on Penal Code, Vehicle Code and related laws.
• Learn basic criminal investigation procedures including ethics, witness interrogation, and evidence collection.
• Ride with officers to observe peace officer duties and use police information systems.
• Assist in processing, labeling and storing property and evidence; perform related paperwork.
