Brief Summary

This individual contributor position operates welding equipment to build and weld poles using GMAW (MIG) welding. Must be certified in MIG welding to meet AWS requirements as well as specialized certifications to customer requirements. Will be required to weld in flat and horizontal positions. Adjusts welding equipment to its prescribed settings, operates oxy/acetylene burning and plasma cutting equipment. Prepares poles for final weld off. Uses IFS labor reporting system, standard shop forms, move tags, reads and utilizes blueprints. May be called upon to operate Base Press, Rounder, Straightener, and forklift provided employee is qualified.

Essential Functions:

  1. Weld and clean welds
  2. Record labor when complete and move tag
  3. Load on or load off completed parts
  4. Determine when weld quality falls below acceptability and take corrective action or report to QA, Leadperson, or Supervisor
  5. Set up machines to the proper requirements so that usable parts are produced
  6. Use blueprints to determine which weld procedure to use in order to assure weld soundness and integrity
  7. Communicate with co-employees and supervisors
  8. Operate forklifts and overhead cranes
  9. Perform housekeeping duties in shop and work sites
  10. Use common shop mathematics, in feet, inches, degrees, and fractions, in reading complex prints, and standard specifications
  11. Manufacture product per shop drawings
  12. This position reports into the shop’s Production Supervisor

Required Qualifications

  1. Read and decipher blueprints and flat sheets without assistance and use them to properly weld scheduled work
  2. Pass and maintain weld certificates for AWS, CWB, and several other customer required certifications in GMAW welding
  3. Setup, operate, and perform general maintenance of equipment without difficulty
  4. Make mathematical calculations in finish welding product to the proper specifications
  5. The ability to physically perform the requirements of the tasks assigned
  6. Demonstrate a commitment to Safety through excellent safety practices and behaviors and conform to all Valmont safety policies and procedures
  7. Actively participate in department LEAN activities off the department, and demonstrate performance working in a team environment
  8. Knowledge of Valmont’s quality procedures, standards, and practices
  9. Must possess acceptable work history and attendance record

Highly Qualified

  1. One (1) year of previous experience operating a forklift
  2. Accurately read and use a tape measure, compass, micrometer, mag level, protractor, versa gauge, and caliper
  3. Ability to locate information from a computer
  4. Proficient at math
  5. Proficient in reading blueprints
  6. A working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and IFS
  7. Must have a high awareness for safety at all times
